Upgrade old iMac OS?

Looking for advice on upgrading the OS on an older iMac. It's a 2007 iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 20-Inch (full specs).

It's currently running OSX 10.4.11 and can't be upgraded from within OSX.

Is there a Linux distro that will run cleanly and easily on this hardware (with a minimum of user admin)? Any other advice on keeping this alive and useful?
