I am looking at getting my Associate IEMA Membership sorted out. There are three routes; Distance Learning course, two week full time course, or just sit the exam. I don't have the time (or money:() to do the courses due to work commitments, but would do the exam.

The only problem is where to get the material to study for the exam without having to do the courses. Anybody have any ideas??

    Hi Hurler85,

I am interested in applying for Associate Membership.

Did you find more information on it?

    Thanks

I did the open book exam back in 2008 and it is relatively straight forward. I used the Enfo library in Dublin, a friends college pass to get books, published papers on line and also some online material. From memory the exam at the time was focused on UK and sustainability aspects.

However, the new online exam seem different, but the sample paper Qs. look ok.

Does anyone who had this ever find it worthwhile?

I'm not a member of anyt professional organisation and the general consensus I've found is that it's either required by your job or you don't bother getting it.

Did it help your employment prospects in any way?

Only saw this now, I did iema as a recent graduate when I first started with a consultancy and fully believed it helped by career. It made me look more professional. The exam is a 2 week open book, I know a lot of people who have done it, none failed. Also membership magazine helps you stay on top of new legislation etc. if anyone is considering it then I would say go ahead

    Hello LadyLabyrinth,

I just wanted to ask whether you purchased the IEMA Handbook or whether your knowledge on the topic was sufficient to pass, as I assume that you studied a degree in an environmental/sustainability discipline. I cannot get my hands on the book at present as I am currently working in Finland and was considering doing the exam some evening.

Also, what industry are you working in as I am keen to secure an environmental/sustainability role in the construction industry. I have a BSc in Environmental Management and I am also ISO 14001 Lead Auditor and SMSTS certified, however I am currently not working in an env/sust role.

I would appreciate you advise on whether I could, as Nike says "just do it".

    Many thanks,
    Patrick.

It's maybe 8 years since I did the exam so it might have changed, but it was an open book exam - so basically you get 10 mini essay questions to answer, and you have the two weeks to research and write up the answers. I believe that is now extended to 28 days. I think I remember they each had a word limit, so its not a huge piece of work - but I used references, like university essays.

There are 3 different areas of knowledge covered in the 10 mini- essays, i cant remember exactly what they are, one was environmental science, one was environmental management and policy. There was nothing unmanageable in it.

My background is not environmental sciences and I didn't have any issues with it as there was enough time to research answers provided you apply yourself enough to study. I didnt buy any of the books they talk about either.

I specialised in environmental policy, and eventually moved into business management within the environmental area. I would say with your qualifications that there are a number of openings now in auditing, ISO 50001, the new ESOS audits, etc that would mean you should have no trouble finding work in this type of area if that is what you are interested in.

    Hello LadyLabyrinth,

Many thanks for the response, it is greatly appreciated. I will sign up for the exam next week and aim to have it done by the end of April.

I had been following the ESOS scheme while I was living in London last year, but since moving home to Ireland (my job is based in Finland though) there seems, as usual, little talk of how Ireland is going to enforce [Article 8] of this European Directive. I have not been following it in Ireland, but I assume there has not been much happening. The government will probably wait and see if ESOS works for the UK, change the name and then just copy it :). Perhaps I am wrong though.

Has there been any discussion as to how Ireland intend to transpose the directive into Irish law? Will 14001 and/or 50001 be sufficient to meet the requirements?

I am keen to secure a role in an environmental discipline in Ireland, so I would appreciate any advise you may be able to offer me. If you could PM me and I could provide you with my email address to discuss further, I would greatly appreciate that.

    Thanks,

The Institute if Environmental Scientists is also an option. If you fulfill the work experience and education criteria no exam is needed.

    Hello NoCrackHaving,

Many thanks for the head's up of the IES. They have some interesting publications and considering I have an environmental qualification, there should be no issue with me becoming an associate member.

I have just completed the application and forwarded it in. Should know in the coming weeks whether my application is successful.

    Thanks again.
