Employer witholding paper copy of P45

Hi folks, Im wondering if you can shed some light on this for me. I left my position with my previous employer at the end of September. My last payroll was processed, and my understanding is that with that, a digital copy is sent/generated and sent to the tax office.

Now, the tax office have confirmed that they have my P45 (and indeed sent me a copy), but my employer is refusing (ignoring all communications) to return the paper copy.

My question is; is the paper copy which my previous employer is holding onto relevant / important, and what would be the appropriate steps to take, if so, to ensure it's return (phonecalls / emails have been ignored).

    Thanks in advance

If you have a copy from the Revenue why do you want the copy your employer has?

Thats my question really, is it relevant / important to have this? The copy from the tax office is basically a screenshot of one of their systems.

You are fine, you don't need the one from your former employer as you have all relevant details as do the tax office.

    You've no need of it.

Unless perhaps you want to sign on between now and the end of December.

If you get another job this financial year, just give them a copy of what you were given, and make sure that you contact Revenue yourself to tell them about your new employer number.

P45s come in all shapes and sizes, personally I've only received emailed PDFs for several years now.

The key thing is to make sure that Revenue get one for each job that you leave, ideally electronically directly from your employer.
