MA History - What does it get me?

I realise that my qualifications are the butt of many jokes, but just what does a 1.1 or 2.1 Masters degree in History get me employment wise? I have a 2.1 in English and History at undergraduate level and should get either a 2.1 or 1.1 in my MA history....

    I've worked out these options

    Teacher - 2 years hDip
    Lecturer - 3+ years PhD

And that is it...after 5 years of college...this is what I have as options. It's actually rather depressing. Just wondering if anyone has thought outside the box and got something?

I've got ask what were you thinking it would get you during the time you were studying?

I don't but much in what school career guidance is like but surely at some point you must have thought what you were going to do after college.

The people I know with similar education all work jobs where it is completely irrelevant and they could have got with a leaving cert. Actually there is one working a rather good job but the education he has was of no help. He basically got the job by sticking in one company and working his way up and then being headhunted.

You could do media on top and go into TV presenting, research, writing etc... So there are other options. You could start doing your own podcast on things you like about history. Check out Stuff You should Know for an excellent example.

You could do a one year level 8 course in business or computing. Its basically a four year undergraduate converted into one year and then go onto your masters in it the following year. Thinks its called a higer diploma and you need an undergraduate degree to do do. It's how a lot of people survive after doing arts.

P.S you probably allready know this.

You could do a postgrad in archival studies if you are interested , your history MA would benefit you greatly for that kind of work .

It's up to you and how you sell yourself. I know a guy who studied History & Politics in the UK and now works in a senior position for a tech company in sales. He's fantastic at his job btw...
