Hey guys. Just looking for some advice here. I currently have the following:

    MacBook Air 128GB flash storage
    UPC Horizon box
    WD 2TB HDD (not NAS)

What i would like to do is set it up so that the HDD is on the network. Then create some kind of home network where i could set the HDD as the default download location.

I wouldnt say im the most knowlegable when it comes to networking so i dont know if im missing out on something essential to complete the set up ie. is there something that i can attach to the HDD to make it visible on the network.

Also any advice on how to make the setup as simple as possible.

Does the Horizon Box support HDD drives?

Im with UPC but dont have a horizon box.

The setup I have at home is a router (Netgear) that allows me to plug in an ext hdd for the whole network to see.

My Mac picks up on the hard drive via finder and Voila! an External HDD that is now a NAS Drive.

So the horizon box does have 2 USB ports. I called UPC to see if I could use the box to help me set up a network. They informed me that the USB ports have been disabled to prevent hacking the box. The USB ports are put there at the manufacturing stage and then UPC request them to be deactivated. so its a no go.

I picked up one of these (on the way) http://www.belkin.com/networkusbhub/

Hopefully it will do what i need.

keep us posted. I have the same problem. I have UPC horizon and a Zyxel NSA 310 which I have a 1TB hard drive plugged in. On my old vodafone router I just plugged it in using ethernet cable and it showed up on my computer. Now when I do the same with horizon nothing shows up.

An Apple AirPort Extreme does this.
