    Evenin', boyos.

Right, I've the car booked into the garage for Saturday morning with a bit of a list of things I need to get done (mk4 golf). I was hoping that your collective wisdom would help give me an idea of what to expect cost-wise. Here's what needs doing (that I know of :-/ )...

    - Brake pads replaced
    - Bearing gone in front-right
    - Gear linkage tightened up
    - New tyre

Aaand finally, and this is the one that worries me, but about five days ago, the engine temp light began to flash on the dash. It comes and goes. Generally on a hill, always in the morning or when the car has been idle for a while. Thinking this was actually an "engine oil level" light, I checked the dipstick.

    Bone. Dry.

Well, not quite. The oil was about 1cm deep. I only topped it up about six weeks ago. So it looks like I'm burning oil. I can smell it, but there's no smoke coming from the exhaust.

That's my theory, anyway (which isn't worth much). What do you guys think? Are we looking at around a grand here? Cheers.

I'd be finding out the condition of the engine before spending any other money. Is the car in generally good condition?

Yeah, I mean it's fairly together otherwise. A bit of a tractor (1.9 sdi) but nothing else wrong that I can see.
