Memories of Xmas past

Ah, it's that time of year again. Time to dust off your baubles, get them presents wrapped and send those cards out to Auntie Alice and Uncle Wilfrid. The joy, the festivity, the sheer wonderfulness of it all! Hurrah!

I am reminded of times long gone, up early and anxious that my science kit would be under the tree, as hoped. No Santa, mind, I'd learnt that at an early age. I still enjoyed all the xmas guff, though. Sitting there amongst the discarded wrappings, reading "Origin of the Species" or hugging my Wookie. I'd be watching the seasonal special of Nancy Drew on telly or maybe it was Dorothy and her chums on the yellow brick road. Ah, such innocence and bliss. Even enjoyed the dinner, especially if the parents weren't bellowing at each other :D

What are your favourite memories of the festive season, folks?

It used to start around the winter solstice.

A day off school on the 8th December and going into town (yes, that town) with my mother and brother for some shopping, having saved up pocket money for months for people's presents. Visiting Santa after a long queue down the street outside Cleary's (the queue was part of the fun), then over to Arnotts to see the Christmas lego display and then the Christmas dinner in the Arnott's restaurant. Looking at the lights on Grafton Street and the window display in Switzers. Then being dragged to evening mass in the pro-cathedral.

    Best day of the year.

Ah, brilliant! I want my "I've seen Santa at Switzers" badge back! Actually, at that age the Switzers guy was a bit too glam and freaky for my, I much preferred the Brown Thomas dude. And the queue was shorter :D

Interestingly, it appears that young Jesus wasn't actually born in December.

September IIRC, it was only moved to Dec 25th to coincide with pagan holiday natalis solis invicti (the Roman "birth of the unconquered sun").

But yes, its either early or late for Christmas

I hate when people use the term xmas, why not Christmas? Or are we trying to be PC?

I have no idea what you're on about. I've always used that abbreviation. But if it pleases you; happy festivus!

X in Xmas comes from ancient but common abbreviation of Christ in Greek.

The X is an English representation of the Greek letter Chi, χ, the first letter of the word Χριστός, meaning Christ.

However despite all this Xmas or Christmas it should still be pronouned Christ-mas not Ex-mas.

I pronounce X-mas as either kiss-mas or Cross-mass. Works for me.

Really getting into the festive cheer here. Polished off a slab of guinness over the weekend :) Blasted out some xmas tunes Sunday morning and inspected some trees for the cutting :)

Stocking up on whiskey, half the pressie list bought. Ordered decorations online, weekend away booked. I'm thoroughly excited.

    Merry Christmas AH!

The ones coming home were probably crying with horror, remembering how much they hated the place.

First time I came back (after being away 2 years) I did shed a tear, I admit. Come to think of it, it's nearly 2 years since my last visit, so I'll probably weep once more :D
