Screen won't turn back on after closing lid/sleep mode/inactivity - Windows 8.1

Hey, I updated to Windows 8.1 whenever it was released. Since then I've noticed that whenever my screen fully turns off (e.g. closing lid of laptop, computer going into sleep mode, a long period of inactivity) it will not turn back on for love nor money. The computer is still running (I can see lights on the keyboard, plus if I'm running something like PS3 media server it keeps on serving), but the screen won't turn on. The only way I can get screen back on is by pressing & holding the power button until laptop fully shuts down, and then turn it back on.

This is obviously not ideal - any ideas?

Check with the manufacturer if there's an updated ACPI driver or power management software available.
