Channel 5 HD is no longer viewable with a UK FTV card. You now need to be a Sky subscriber (in UK) to view it.

Perhaps it a sign it's going free to air or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I'd say it's gone behind a pay wall like the HD versions of ITV2/3/4 etc and will be remaining there.

As a result, surely Sky could now add the HD versions of C5, ITV2, ITV3 & ITV4 to the Irish epg and block any programmes necessary on rights' grounds – given that they're subscription channels. The fta SD versions obviously still can't be added.

If the ITVs were going to happen they would've happened before now - but they won't appear on the EPG here under any guise for the foreseeable future thanks to TV3.

Channel 5 have repeatedly and consistently stated that they have no interest in broadcasting into the Republic - they will not foot the EPG costs.

Technically they would need double the satellite bandwidth to broadcast special versions of these HD channels for the republic so that certain programmes may be blocked. Take channel 4 sd, there is at least 7 versions going out on satellite. Because they carry out regional advertising. One version is aimed at the republic.

The reason why there's a special version of Channel 4 is because the UK versions are FTA. They need an extra encrypted version to allow blocking in the Republic.

This wouldn't apply to the ITVs or Channel 5 as they are already encrypted. All that would need to be changed are card entitlements for Irish viewers for the affected programming.

But as already surmised, it won't be happening in the (near-) future anyway.

    Tv3 wouldnt be happy.

Its never going to happen unless Tv3 go bust.

I'm sure TV3/3e don't have Irish rights to all programming across ITV2,3&4 - therefore there is no reason for the HD versions not to be on the Irish epg with certain programmes blocked. Also, we pay more for Sky HD that our UK counterparts - for less channels, so it would be an attractive add-on for Sky HD in Ireland.
