Recently bought 3 yr old VW Passat from a private seller. The car has about 49K miles and is due for servicing. Question is should I go to a VW authorised dealer or a local garage? Is extra money charged by VW garage worth it?

I am in Naas /Newbridge area and have recently moved here so appreciate boardies opinion on this.

If anyone can let me know any local reliable garage who deal with VW, it will be great.

    Thanks

As long as the independent garage follows the correct service schedule and uses good quality parts, plus stamps the service book and provides you with a fully detailed invoice then there is reason for paying extra for a main dealer service.

If the car has a full MDSH then there'll be a slight advantage come resale to keeping that up. It won't make that much of a difference, and it shouldn't make any, but it is there. If the OP plans to keep the car for a while then IMO this will be outweighed by the other advantages in price & service of going to a good independent.

Its a big ask though George as too many will not follow schedule, will use wrong oil and cheapest service parts available to them.
George is of course correct is that if you get a respected independant garage, all will be well and you will likely get a better service than the main dealer.
Its also worth considering the offer prices the main dealers are doing if only basic service is required.

As stated above a reputable indie mechanic will be just as good as the main dealer and a good deal cheaper too. The only reason I would see with going to a main dealer with a car as new as yours is that there may be some service measures that are outstanding, although a quick call with the details to the service manager should be able to clear that up for you. Plus if there are any recalls due on your car they try get them all done while the car is in the garage.

I know with some of the Passats there was a recent software update for the EGR valve on some models which prevents it clogging up prematurely. Im not sure if the indie mechanics have the facility to update the cars software whilst servicing ( I could be wrong though )

Once the mechanic follows the manufacturers spec for oil and filters etc. you should be in safe hands. Some of the less reputable lads will use the cheapest of the cheapest oil and parts on your car in an effort to reduce costs and maximise profits.
