Hey I have to travel over to blanch tomorrow and I'm taking the 17A bus.
Is it a safe route ?

Yes it's fine. Sit downstairs to avoid second hand smoke.

Yes it's safe... it goes through rough areas but the bus itself is safe, as the previous poster suggested, stay downstairs.

So people smoke upstairs which is illegal and seriously anti-social and presumably there is no law inforcement of the no-smoking rule in place and presumanly the driver ignores this rule and law abiding people are advised to stay downstairs:

From this I would conclude that the 17a Bus is NOT SAFE.

Incidentally, this route is one of a handful of routes that it is planned to privatise. Perhaps the private operator will ensure better law enforcement than Dublin Bus seem to have,

That's a very big conclusion to arrive at.

While I'm no fan of smokers at all, there's a hell of a difference between someone smoking on a bus and a bus not being safe.

I definitely am too long outside of the country, but how can they be allowed to smoke?
Are there no gardai in Blanch, or is there a legendary donot shop/ chipper/ coffee shop out there or something that is more important to be giving trade to than keeping a bit of law and order?

Used to take the 17A from blanch to DCU for nearly a year. Never had any problems or saw anything anti-social.

While it's illegal it still happens. Some drivers call the Garda but they'll just do it again the next time they get on the bus.

This is Ireland all over, one set of rules for scumbags and another for the silent majority.

I wouldn't feel safe on it either BTW.

Prosecute and ban them, should solve the problem.

Sorry, forgot about bricks through windows and threats to drivers if that was done.

It's grand! I've gotten it several times, morning and evening, up to last bus at night. It's a fine bus, I've never seen anyone smoking on it.

    Second hand smoke can kill.

I get the 17a to and from work about six days a week. I've never experienced any issues on it, other than a woman upstairs offering me a can of beer, which didn't cause any harm. Never saw people smoke on it either and I've been getting it a minimum of ten times per week for the past 9 months.

I get it twice a day (various times - including last bus a lot). As safe as any bus in Dublin. Never came across smoking on it. Odd few undesirables, but stay out of their way and they'll stay out of yours.

The rough areas aren't as rough as they're made out to be (I'm probably from one of them!)

I'd be more worried about its reliability tbh cos safety isn't a problem nowadays on them.

Well it's irrelevant as we can see that smoking is not a problem experienced by 17a users.

Yeah, nevertheless the bus is safe.

The 17A is grand. Traffic is the only real problem with the route.

Yeah we all agree the 17A is safe, but smoking on a bus isn't.

I'm not sure if folks are splitting hairs for the sake of point scoring, or what. Either way, it's petty and pretty much irrelevant and all involved should know better.

OP: you've had as good an answer is you're going to get by some helpful posters. The rest of you: seriously..this is why threads here derail so quickly.
