What do they do? Do they skate around the track beating the crap out of each other?

I love the idea of Roller Derby. I'd definitely be up for taking pictures at an event some time. But I can't seem to find any matches being played around now.

Shot some roller derby a few years back in London. Takes a while to know whats going on, how points are scored, strategy and know what to look for when shooting, keeping an eye on the Jammer to make their move against blockers etc..

I wouldn't be setting up flashes for Roller derby either. Way too distracting for the audience and competitors.

They are some great shots! Correct me if I'm wrong, but was that the Glagsow game against London's Brawl Saints when Texas was over to play London Brawling?

Depends on where you are based. There are bouts coming up in Dublin, Limerick and Cork in the next couple of weeks.

Yeah it was, in the Excel in London about 3 years ago? The Jammer with the Glasgow Roller girls is a friend of mine so I got in to shoot some photos. The light was a bit crap for the pace of the Derby really.

It almost feels like Roller Derby has become one of those cool, niche things to shoot nowadays. Sort of like Burlesque where its on the fringe for most people and a lot more common than they realise.

I was at that, two great bouts, you did that one justice. And Glasgow are a lovely team.

I suppose it has become somewhat, some photographers have really made it into an art. The speed and generally awful lighting make a challenge. There's a new thread on the Roller derby forum dedicated to awesome Roller derby photos.
