    hi,

i recently changed to android, a htc one, from an iphone.
i'm having very little problems as its very natural and with connectivity through google, its been great so far.
just an issue or two if you have the time.
i've had an issue with notifications coming in the middle of the night, for emails, after having turned of notifications etc, but was told by support in vodafone it was an issue??!!
i wanted to clean up the mail and calender apps if possible. i noted when i got the phone, it didn't have the google calender, so started using the phones, but then installed it, then i was getting all sorts of notifications, from duplication i presume. would it be easier to just use the phones, as the sync is there anyway, or am i wrong? also, i've several email accounts like most, and some don't run through my gmail account, and i like it that way. so should i bother with the gmail app at all then?
if i wanted to use the google calender app, can i uninstall the phones original one?

also, BTW, i see on here that people are 'rooting' their phone, whats that about?

    regards,

    ed

    • You may not be able to uninstall original apps (ie calendar etc) but you can disable them, which does the same thing as they take up very little space anyway, this is generally done through the settings>apps menu.

    • Regarding notifications, they may often be changed int he app or in the phones settings menu. If it's the Mail app (comes with phone) then its the phone, if its the Gmail app (does not come with the phone) then it'll be in the apps settings.

    • If the notifications not being silenced when set to then go get the phone replaced by Vodafone, just google some consumer rights info and feed them that, most places hate that and try to get things over with a bit quicker.

    • The calendar is a another app that may be duplicated. If I were you I would use all the official google apps (ie: Google drive, Gmail, etc) instead of the stock apps. there's nothing wrong with the stock apps, I use the stock calendar for example, but sometimes it's handier to have it all going through your Google account with the official apps, as some of the non official apps (though still made by Google) may not update, back up or save in the same way.

    • Roughly: rooting facilitates installing custom operating systems on your phone. I've done it on two HTC phones, and personally it was just an attempt to replace the fairly bloated software with something a bit leaner, there was just so much crap I didn't need that my phone was doing. Some ofthem are great, some are terrible. With a brand new phone (I've the Sony Xperia Z1) I don't think it's needed at all and I'd imagine most people to do change the OS know why, rather than trying to find a reason.

thanks, thats a very good and helpful reply. much appreciated.
one thing though, when i looked into disabling the calender app, no luck.
i'm happy using the phones mail app for the reasons i stated, but would like to smooth things as you describe by disabling the phone calender, and re-installing googles calender.
i tried the method you described, but there's no calender in there, only googles calender, not the phones??

If you go to settings >apps>all you should have a calendar app there, if you tap or there is a menu with 'force stop' and 'disable' buttons s we as information about the size of the app etc.

Did that, but there's no calender app in there to cancel! The only ones in there I don't recognise is 7 digital, and what seems to be a Vodafone one, discover?
Is there any way to do it, or should I leave well enough alone?
