Was looking at changing our 11 reg Octavia for a land rover discovery due to kids. Looking at a 07 for 22k or a 08 for 28k. What are people's opinions on this jeep. Do very little miles in Octavia so fuel will not be a major concern, other costs will be such as tax and servicing. Are these really expensive.

Did the kids ask for a Land Rover Discovery? They've got expensive taste!

I would assume everything is expensive for a landrover.....tyres for one can cost upwards of 500 euros EACH!
For the practicalities of kids id be looking at an s max or similiar.

Firstly they are not a "jeep".... That is a different brand alltogether.

Sibling had one for a while.... I liked it, it was a very capable vehicle and had a very solid feel to it.

They got rid though for a people carrier in then end as running costs were high for the land rover.... The coffin nail being tyres.

Personaly if I had 4+ kids I too would look at the S-max.

Looked at tyres around 200 each so not too bad as tyres go. Wife will not drive people carrier from what she is telling me  have a farm so lr would be hand for towing cattle from the mart.

If you can afford the running costs , go for it . They are nice to drive and as safe as you will get for the kids .
But everything will be more expensive than the octavia .
Is 22k the best value for a 07 ? I'm not well up on the prices but it sounds a touch dear

If you are looking at a 07 you will not be getting cheap tax . So look for a low mileage one cheap meaning go back the years more put more money in your pocket for running expenses.

Suggest you do some shopping around those prices are well over the going rate.

Tyres are more expensive than a car tyre but buying ATs will out last any car tyre by more than double. Budget tyres at 200 to 250 each.

Have a look at range rover and Jeep grand cherokee. The 2nd hand market for big suv is buyers market.

Honestly? An 07 Disco is a pig to drive, compared even to an Octavia, and is a less safe place for the kids. They're great off road (and for towing cattle, if that's a must), but heavily compromised on. An S Max will be far safer, and a far nicer drive too.

Ah here, Discovery is miles ahead of a S-MAX...
S-MAX to me looks like an ugly van!

Off-road it is, but it's less safe for kids and less good to drive on-road.

    Fair enough.

S Max, is far more economical in initial and running costs than a Land rover, also easier to get kids in and out of and I would wager can safely "hold" more kids as well. It's not a bad drive either.

Now if towing trailer is more important to you than any of the above............

Ah now I wouldnt go as far as call them a pig to drive but I drive a patrol myself and find it grand so maybe Im a bit blinkered

Father in law bought one last year. Fantastically practical car with 7 seats, never really cared for it though. Nor, did he, shifted on after 9 months. Didn't care for it on there open road. 3 has shocking reliability issues though. Just checked on honest John and it has the dubious distinction of having the greatest number of warranty claims on Warranty Direct of any used car from a European manufacturer.

Every car is a compromise, and more ability off-road comes at the expense of less ability on. It's all down to your own priorities, really. :)

A Land Rover Discovery is first-and-foremost a terrible car. That is simply because it isn't a car, it's a lorry, and responds well to being treated as such. Unless you plan on bulldozing over mountains and towing a hefty horsebox, you don't need it. Having said that, the Disco 3 uses the hard-as-nails Ford AJD-V6 2.7l twin-turbo unit, so reliability shouldn't be an issue.

In the same vein, my brother is looking at an 03 LD Disco 2.5 TD5 - can anyone help me out here with recommendations on what they're like - reliability, servicing, what fubars, economy etc.

    This one btw: http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/land-rover-discovery-td5-xs-auto/5875135

    TIA as they say.

Mate of mine has one of them, and I borrow it semi-regularly. Sturdy, beefy wagon, and very much a lorry as opposed to a car. BMW engine IIRC, they can be a bit soft but they keep rolling. Economy isn't too bad for a wagon of that weight. My mate regularly boots furk out of it on the motorway, cruising at over the ton. He hasn't blown it up yet at 165,000 miles. ;)

I have a LR 3 V8, and love it. Great off road, a people carrier when needed and when polished up looks sweat. The seats and interior are luxurious, very comfortable for long drives.

Once you don;'t mind the cost then as a 4x4 I dont think anything ticks all the boxes like a LR. Comfort of a Range, still has prestige and does the job off road at the weekends.

Op you could look at a 3.0d jeep grand Cherokee. The 06-09 model goes very cheap these days because of tax. It will do the same mpg as a discovery slightly higher tax but you could buy a seriously nice one for 10k euro and have 15k euro left over for the cost of extra tax and maintance. You also mentioned about towing they can legally tow up to approx 3.5 ton but would easily tow more and they have a very good 4wd system. There worth a look IMO.

A Discovery 3/4 is the best off road 7 seater you can buy, they are both comfortable and practical as well as being very capable off road and ok on. - however they are expensive and things do go wrong. We ran various discos from 2000 until earlier this year - sold our 2005 D3 which we had for 5 years in Feb. Also had a brand new 07 Disco (17 breakdowns in 2 1/2 years) and various other 4x4's over the last ten years. Now run a Pajero (08) and a Landcruiser (06)

Parts and Labour prices on the Disco were ridiculous - e.g. replacement key for Disco €350, LC €140 - everytime I took the Disco for a service it ended up costing me €1000 in extra stuff (compressor, sensors, wiring etc) - only extra things on the LC in 50k kms were brake pads - last minor service cost €99 from main dealer - Disco was always €300+

If you can afford it the Disco is brilliant if you want reliability get a Landcruiser - not as refined or comfortable but brilliantly engineered. The Pajero is old school like the Patrol or LR Defender - basic but rugged, lots of kit but noisy and uncomfortable compared to the Disco and LC.

All of the above however when things are going right I still love the LR 3. I have a pajero at the moment as the LR is in the shop. Its an fine vehicle but like comparing a lancer with a top spec merc. I am getting a new key for my LR and 350 is cheap.
Along with the key I am getting the suspension sorted, new bushes and a fog light repaired for just over 2k. But I knew it would cost me when I bought it.
Land cruisers are immense and I would love one as my next vehicle. They are around the same price as an LR (unless you get the narrow 'Prado" type).

Good luck with your purchase - I had a D2 (2001) Td5 for a few years and liked it . Got it with 166K on the clock and sold it with 226K up .
Gave good service - biggest jobs were DMF and in tank fuel pump .
I do all my own work so wasn't too bad and I found the Td5 was a good performer and not as troublesome as some would have you believe . Regular servicing using the correct oils, fluids etc is crucial .
I now have a 2008 Galaxy 1.8 TDCI and am very impressed with it:) - spacious , economical , great on the road etc .
When the the D3 came out they got some very poor reports - I think that by 2007 some of the early faults were sorted . They are still very expensive to work on - I had decided to keep well away from them as from what I'd seen most jobs would be dealer only . If I was going back to LR I would like to get the latest D2 I could find (2004) .
