Best tyres on the market for value and quality

I've to get two new front tyres for the winter for my passat. Just wondering does anybody have any suggesting on the best tyres out there for value and quality? Or simply just the best one on the market? Would I be better off in getting 4 new tyres considering all 4 tyres on the car seem to be a different brand?

    Thanks

Good man Martin, that should kick off a lively thread and most of it will have nothing to do with tyres for your Passat.

PS: Try Goodyear, Michilin quality at 60% of the price.

can't go wrong with Goodyear Eagle F1's, shop around for the best price

As above, Goodyear Eagle F1's are great. I also like Hankook Ventus V12 for a bit of a cheaper option.

S1 Evo's are a lot better than the V12's for only a little more.

The tyre size I have at the moment are 215/55 R16 93V

Im currently not doing a lot of millage but I want a tyre that is excellent on grip. I don't mind paying the few extra bob on the tyres.

So the Goodyear eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 are the best on the market to suit me needs?

Uniroyal rainstars - you wont go wrong with those unless you do trackdays...

I also like Uniroyal tyres. I fitted four of them to my car 3 years ago and only now need to consider replacing two of them (down to 3mm). I did a good bit or research before I bought them, and have to say I am very pleased with the results after 3 years usage.
They are well suited to Irish driving conditions imho....being marketed as 'The Rain Tyre'.

    My 2c.

I had to get 4 tyres on my car last saturday. I got 4 Maxtrack Maximus M1s, mainly as their rating(for "cheapies") was B and C for wet grip and economy and the place I was in was a chinese take-away only job stuffed with Ds and Es. That and the lad who owns the place (a mate)had them on his own car. Good grip, quiet enough and surefooted in the wet. Happy enough with them.

€60 a corner fitted, balanced and tracked, so not cheap, not really dear. And not really optional either as he does our tyres on account(work). Going elsewhere would have caused snottyness!:D But, they ride nice, good grip. Wear, time will tell. I'm not a huge chinese tyre fan, the opposite actually, but these seem to be good enough.(edit -checked the docket, that's ex-vat, I'm registered so don't usually count it)

    Are these the tyres?

Yup. Like I said, I'm happy with them on my 2l petrol and I batter along on mainly crap roads. I've had enough ditch-finders to know what those are, and these grip very well. Fuel economy seems good too. They're actually pretty sure-footed. They're also only what I bought, I'm making no claims as to their value or bestyness. 16" tyres btw.

    Retreaded tyres - probably legal.
Tyres with tread peeling off the tyre - rather not.
Go back to the main dealer.

Thanks for the response, I'll be with them tomorrow & see what they have to say about it.

I thought retreaded tyres weren't legal anymore?

Please don't hijack other people's threads, it's not a very nice thing to do.

Apologies, relatively new to Boards, the discussion was about tyres & my question was tyre & safety related, maybe 'hijack' is a little strong a word to use. I will be more careful in future, I can guarantee I dont do 'Hijacking'. Thank you for bring your concerns to my attention.

Got a good price for these on the VRS.
    http://www.eiretyres.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco=124&cart_id=11833121.124.18691&Breite=225&Quer=40&Felge=18&Speed=&kategorie=6&Marke=Goodyear&ranzahl=4&x_tyre_for=ALL&Herst=Goodyear&m_s=3&rsmFahrzeugart=ALL&Label=C-A-70-2&details=Ordern&typ=D-120057

I got 29500km's out of the continental Sport Contact 2's on the front, 2.5mm left now on them and need to be changed. Have put that mileage on them in 11 months.

What do you think of them Goodyear tires, seem to get great ratings, (http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/Skoda/Octavia-vRS.htm) but wondering what lads think if we start getting cold weather. I am doing circa 190km's a day to and from work on secondary roads which may not get salted by the time I get on the road.

    Thanks v much
