Avoid the Renault unless you want regular issues with it and it's not reliable.

Volvo is nice and reliable, but if you have never had a 4x4 before, costs go up as well for fuel, running day to day etc. price will still hold for 07/08 versions.

Another 7 seater to consider is the Ford Galaxy, I know you can still put in shopping and buggys behind the last seat on the Galaxy which is something to consider when all your seats are occupied.

I like the safety aspects of a volvo good solid car its the reliability end of things that concerns me. Got rid of vw transporter 1.9 tdi because gearbox and clutch issues and dont want to go down that route again.

Not a fan of Renault's, the xc90 is a nice car. However, one thing to be aware of, certain models (usually higher spec ones) have rear Nivomat (self leveling) struts/shocks. The advantages of them is that they ensure a smoother ride when pulling a trailer. The disadvantage is that they are between €300 and €400 each + labor. A friend of mine has gone through two pairs in the last 4 years as the NCT lads keep failing them.

Neither of them are great tbh. Transfer box in the XC are troublesome and veery expensive to repair. People claim they can replace bearings in them but they rarely last afterwards. There's a huge difference in road tax between the two cars you've picked btw (assuming the espace in on the co2 system, which I'm sure it is.) A woman I know bought one new in '05, she started getting very expensive problems with it from '08 onwards. She got shot of it eventually last year (got a pittance for it)
