Absolute scam, they had a very vague purpose a few years ago but now that you can order official certs online from the state for less than half what they charge they're just preying on those who can't search properly.

    where's the rip-off?

They publish their fee, no hidden costs, yes its more expensive than the state service, but it does not in anyway constitute a rip-off.

They have to pay the state fee and they add a service charge on top of that.

    Misrepresentation:

This address does not exist, he must know the local post man:
Births Deaths Marriages, Administration Head Quarters, Navan Road, Dunboyne, Co Meath. Ireland.

But if he does get his post, then the "address" does exist, maybe that road has no street numbers ... In the countryside "knowing the postman" is how ones gets the post

Misrepresentation because of an invalid address? Clutching at straws there. How exactly does that equate to a Rip Off? Because they don't have a fancy office?

Because the service is completely and utterly pointless? You're paying significantly extra for a delay in delivery.

On the one hand I admire the entrepreneurship of this business model but on the other I feel it is an unnecessary middleman,

but in our capitalist world everyone is free to setup their own business, and if people are willing to pay then so be it,

the name is misleading though? It sounds like a State Agency, is that illegal?

I mean you cannot have the word "Bank" in the name of a business that might be misleading without the permission of the Finance Minister (even if your name happens to be Bank!), surely there should be something similar for official sounding names like the Dublin Mint "Office"

€40 for a birth cert is pure exploitation. Got mine for half the price through official channels.

For anyone even considering using that site, Don't bother.

This isn't a scam, it's a business that takes advantage of lazy or misinformed people

    Gotta love Ireland.

If it was England they'd have been shut down by the office of fair trading long ago.

Just like a centra type shop, you pay for the convenience or because you're thick, same thing

They provide zero convenience over the state's certificates.ie - they just make the entire process slower in fact.

Not true, there are plenty of similar sites in the UK offering to submit tax returns for people, when all they do is charge money for filling in a form.

Tax return forms can be complicated and usually do scare people - just look how many people pay to get their MED1 submitted here when it takes minutes online.

certificates.ie is neither complicated nor scary.

Slightly OT. But there is a similar type website for the theory test. Pops up the the learning to drive forum every now and again. You fill out a form and pay them money to eventually copy the form over to the real site. Comes up when you google theory test as the first one I think.

    Paying for the inconvenience.

I've noticed similar with the EHIC card. Fools and their money...

Sorry but in the UK if a company was purporting to be a government office through deception with an address like:
Births Deaths Marriages, Administration Head Quarters, Navan Road, Dunboyne, Co Meath. Ireland.

And not their actual address as on their company registration information, they would be shut down.

Would be the same case here in the Netherlands, the Tax office would have a real problem with it for sure

    Edit:
    http://www.asa.org.uk/Rulings/Adjudications/2011/11/UK-GRO-Certificates/SHP_ADJ_164312.aspx

    There you go:
The ASA welcomed UK GRO’s willingness to amend its website. However, we considered the acronym ‘GRO’ in UK GRO’s name which appeared throughout the website, together with the fact that UK GRO offered the same service that was available from the GRO itself and claims such as “official”, “General Register Office types” and “All certificates obtained from Govt sources” created the overall impression that the website was the GRO. We considered that consumers could be misled into thinking that they were buying a certificate from the GRO, when that was not the case. We therefore concluded that the claims were misleading.

The claims breached CAP Code (Edition 12) rules 3.1 and 3.3 (Misleading advertising).

The self-assessment tax return issue was featured on BBC Money Box recently. Some websites use the same colours & fonts as the official UK government website and charge for filling in the form. The revenue spokesperson said there was nothing they could do.

Loads of bastards. They have lost their place near the top of the results since I did my theory in 2012 thankfully.
