I have a son who having passed 21 has moved off my company health insurance plan and is now self insured. He is still in full time education and is dependent on me : can I claim for his health insurance costs on my tax return ( I am currently paying for the policy and the renewals come to me as the policy holder). Additionally if he has any qualifying illness costs not covered by his insurance can I also claim for him under my MED1 Thank You

Tax relief for medical insurance is given at source - so there's nothing else to claim. The rules for medical expenses relief are that the person who pays the bill gets the relief - so if you pay then you are entitled to relief.

The amount the relief can be claimed on is the premium paid by your employer for you and your dependants where it is treated as a benefit in kind. If your son is paying his own insurance privately then he is already granted tax relief at source on his premium.

If you pay any of his expenses not covered by his insurance then you can claim tax relief on them so long as they are qualifying expenses for tax relief
