They're both guilty of bringing a country to it's knees. In Blairs case Iraq and Berties, Ireland

In fairness to Bertie and all the crimes he committed against the country, he did do a decent job with the Northern question.

Bertie was a protege of Haughey, he learnt every trick in the book from him. His stand out feature was that he was much more personable than Haughey ever was.

As a general thought that's not to say FF ever did more wrong to this country than they did right. They were never wishy washy like the blueshirts. They haven't gone anywhere, I expect them to be returned to government in 2016 with FG who apparently are already making overtures. One super party, FF or FG aren't going to deal with SF.

They have one big thing in common - kings of irony. Bertie was Minister for Finance with "no bank account" and Blair is a peace envoy for the middle east. :D

Oh ffs - there were many others who built the peace process before Bertie came along

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Tony Blair is a far more accomplished liar than Bertie. Plus, you know, the war crimes and all of that.

As mush as I despise Ahern, he's nothing like Blair.

Blair should be hanging from a rope in the Hague.

And what does he do now? Middle East peace envoy. Ffs....

In fairness to Bertie and all the crimes he committed against the country, he did do a decent job with the Northern question.

He did in his hole, Reynolds and Major had a huge amount of the groundwork done, Bertie actually got very lucky with the North.

Fair play for comparing himself to Blair, both complete and utter shitheads who should be rotting in prison.

When people ask me how we solved the problems in Northern Ireland and how we brought peace to somewhere that had for so long known only war and killing, my answer is invariably that it was not easy!

Theres another sign of your ignorance and arrogance Bertie. You helped solve the problems. As in you played a part, yourself and Blair didn't do the whole thing by yourselves.

You're an economic traitor and a liar and thief.

I can't think of a single thing that Bertie did that was good for Ireland. Him and Cowen messed things up pretty good and gave cronyism a face, well two faces.

There's no such thing as an accomplishment liar.

There are only liars and liars who haven't been caught yet.

Maybe I did. But even if a Saint was raised by my vote, he'd still be spokin ill of here.

Like the British Armies/Planters over the years. If they had not ridden roughshod/stolen lands from the indigenous population - who were the rightful owners - there would never have been a peace process - or a need for it.

So Bertie, you got it wrong on this one. And for all the Brit lovers ........ LETS HEAR IT FOR THE BRITISH ARMY AND THE PLANTERS

Oh you weren't taking the piss with the "begrudgers" comment?

That's right, people's reservations about Bertie are only "begrudgery".

What did Ahern do as Taoiseach around the time of agreeing the GFA, that any other Taoiseach at that time would have done?

Arguably Reynolds (along with Hume) made a much bigger contribution, brining Sinn Fein in from the cold to a position where a peace agreement was possible.

Eh, like John Bruton, Quote, "Fook the peace process"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,402 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

OK, if Bruton had been Taoiseach he might have messed it up. Might have alienated the nationalist side by cosying up to the unionists and British too much, and not seemed to be an impartal facilitator.

However I think Enda Kenny, Reynolds, or whever else would have done just as much as Bertie.

No, you were right first time round. ''Moaning kids'' would be what Id write now. I dont care about how many backhanders that fella got or any of his accounts. It never did any harm to me or you.

ps. I never voted for anyone. am I not guilty by association though?

A public representative doing so though.

Look, I normally steer clear of politician-bashing threads because they're full of the same auld ad nauseum shyte from people who as you say would criticise any politician at all and never seem to offer alternatives themselves, but you've gotta be having a laugh when you essentially say Bertie wasn't that bad.

Both appointed terrible successors, possibly deliberately

He has a real chip on his shoulder about being blamed for the bubble and though he wont outright say it he clearly thinks voters are just as responsible. He is half right people didnt care what was happening during the boom but the government and financial regulator were responsible for letting the whole mess carry on.
