I purchased a dress on-line. I wanted the dress to be shipped to my sister in Ireland. Thus, the on-line-vendor invoiced me; the billing address to my address in Malaysia and shipping address to Ireland. In my VISA card statement; I was charged 8% GST for on-line purchase by my government. However, when my sister receive the merchandise; she has to pay 41% VAT to receive the dress. Well its a gift from a private person outside EU to another private person in Ireland. Why VAT and why so much. I want to know how to refund VAT

srsly78 - besides the 41% VAT she paid extra 14 euro for other charges ( custom)

The cost of the product is only 108 USD and therefore liable only for VAT if at its taxed

nope, since the online shop was in india, in the statement it was written imported merchandise from India

The highest rate of VAT is 23%. However, she may have had to pay excise duty as it came from outside the EU and may have had to pay a handling charge.

The exemption for gifts is quite low.

You can't. However, you should try to get a GST refund, as it was exported from Malaysia.
