I have been told numerous times over the last week that the way the unsuspecting public are informed through the media , is that they will need to re tune their equipment within 2 weeks or they will lose everything forever. I can imagine the chat and panic among the bingo goers. I class that as scaremongering. A simple leaflet in the post explaining to people how to re-tune or an add on TV just before the Angelus every night for the last few weeks would have been better. I also have been told the there are self called saorview installers charging up to €50 to call out and re tune either a box or TV for people. I would love to know what response people are receiving from their post office now or can the contract company who installed for them be contacted (so much for a 1years warranty when the boxes need retuning for Irish and UK channels) It will be very hard for the public to contact all the crowds (that don't exist any more) who only got registered last year to flog unapproved combiboxes . I predicated last year to the Saorview rep on boards.ie that something like this would happen. I would love to hear what he has to say now regarding this matter of people been fleeced having to pay these guys up to €50 for a re-tune.

Well I have for one tuned a whole host of boxes and tv's for free for any elderly customer in the past few days. I wouldn't charge €50 for such a job with anyone unless they were a long way out of my way and couldn't wait till I was in there area...

Also to note a lot of TV's and boxes have fixed themselves but some such as A few Samsung and Toshiba tv's to name but a few simply removed the channel from the listing due to the fact that Saorview decided to remove the name being broadcasted a stupid error that is going to cause a lot more problems as it beggars belief why they could add the TG4 hd and oireachtas channel in one go...at least then the re-tune would have been worth while..

I have been doing the same for the last few days. Some people insist on giving me money to cover me diesel. But there are guys who are charging €50 for calling back to people who they put in equipment for. In 1 case i came across on Friday a self called saorview installer last year flogged a xoro box to a house bound man who has a Phillips TV which is mpeg4, this man couldn't re-tune this Xoro box and the guy wanted €50 to call back and re-tune it. I disconnected this xoro box and tuned in the TV for cup of earl grey and a nice chat about fishing as i was working next door at the time.

Retune my last week, seems to be the same? whats the gain?

You'd think that the DVB-T system would have included some kind of a protocol to handle this in software rather than confusing customs with complicated stuff.

Gained RTE 1 in Simulcast Hd.....moved frequencies for RTE1+! and rte junior...

rte1 rte junior, and rte1+! will be lost in 3 weeks if retune not done however some tv's such as samsung as toshiba have already lost them as the name is not broadcasted on old signal.....

It would be interesting to know who fed this line out to the media as they need a kick in the ass. Very poor communications strategy on this.

It could have been handled much better. When "rescans" are required it should be policy that all channels on the platform have some sort of simple public education campaign to tell people how to rescan. It's in their interest - if people don't rescan they risk "losing those channels forever".

The way I see it and from what I have heard is that there are people under the illusion that if they don't rescan within the 2 weeks that they will lose these channels and wont ever get them back. now that leaves the unknowing and unsuspecting open to guys out to make quick cash which is starting to happen.

So, did people just misunderstand or were they misinformed? There is a considerable difference when it comes to apportioning blame.

Don't know that Peter but in this day and age to a lot of people maybe misunderstand and misinformed would mean the same thing. The last thing people want now is to be forking out more money for some guy to call out and rescan for channels and after people forking out money last year for the switch over, to them the words Lose channels could mean the end of the world. No more Corrie or Faircity or Winning streak.

People are using different types of equipment, how is RTÉ to give instructions on how to work all of this kit?

Well, in a lot of cases, misinformation is spread by people who misunderstand good information.

One would like to think this process hasn't already started before the info. gets to the general public.

Well what has started is guys are charging €50 for retuning and what else has started is that people think that if they don't get their TV's or boxes re-tuned within the next fortnight then they will lose their channels forever. This misunderstood or Misinformed information is spreading through Bingo halls, Pubs and around rural areas by mouth to mouth faster than the zombie plague in the walking dead.
The re tune Information should have been made available to the public well before Oct21st. And it all should have been made clear to the public that even after the 2 weeks are up people will still be able to re tune and receive their channels.

    .

Indeed, the misinformation is not coming from RTE, it's from word of mouth and newspapers, such as "Saorview users urged to retune or risk losing television service" from the Irish Times:
    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/consumer/saorview-users-urged-to-retune-or-risk-losing-television-service-1.1568163

The UK frequently has rescans without much in the way of hand holding from the broadcasters.

Taken from that Article in the Irish times.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/consumer/saorview-users-urged-to-retune-or-risk-losing-television-service-1.1568163
Saorview has said while viewers will not notice any significant change to the programme guide or additional channels, a failure to rescan will result in eventual loss of service.
Its up to RTE and the Media to inform people that they wont lose their channels for ever. A 1800 number would be better than a 1890 number for people to phone who need help retuning.

A simple, geographic 01 or 021 etc number would actually cost most people nothing.

Non geographic numbers like 1890, 1850 and 0818 are almost always excluded from bundles on landlines and mobiles!

When morning Ireland did a piece on this a week or two ago, they suggested neighbours should help elderly people with the retune.

Most households with reasonably competent teenagers won't have an issue.
Rte should be putting it out there more for people to ask neighbours if they've done it and to help others.
It's no biggy for Rte to do that

The main problem is RTÉ keeping everything top secret. The first mention I heard from them was on the morning of the mux 2 launch.

Why do two or three extra channels on my Samsung day Rescan required on the EPG.

I already rescanned and found MUX 2 from Spur Hill.

Done the re-tune on my Samsung TV last night without hitch.

On Saorview appproved boxes, is there not an over-the-air software update that automatically sorts the channels like Sky & UPC do?

This 'permanent loss of service' thing, I wonder do people reason this out some way, like they are going to miss a never-to-be-repeated update or something? Or do they just believe anything if they hear it from the right person?

Because 2RN are displaying that message on some mux1 ch's,a Rescan still tunes in the mux 1 ch's.

Some people type in the numbers if at one to get to two.
Some use the epg to get to every channel.
Some don't know what the epg is.
    That type of thing.
This forum is a knowledge bubble.

I don't think there's any need for multiple topics on this subject, we set up the sticky for a reason.
