Try the scrapyards...but will they be open?

Make an emergency one? - you have the top of the old one, and know how long it should be.

    Just make sure it's solid.

How much of it is broken?

You have 2 problems as I see it.

    1. Checking the oil level right now.
You could try marking a length of wire with the markings from the dipstick taking account of how far it goes in. Something like the brown or blue core from 2.5 Twin and Earth should be ideal. Make sure no bits can be left behind.

    2. Having the dipstick to refit. Is it broken in such as way as to be able to refit it to the dipstick opening? If it is, then do so.

If you can do both then the absolute panic of replacing it today is eased.

I tried putting it back together just to get me through the day but cant it wont stay together, i was lucky enough to get the piece out of the engine that broke , so i rather not put anything else into it instead of another dipstick,

Well, unless you can borrow one, you're pretty close in your assessment about being snookered.

Just put a litre of oil in and it will be grand for the weekend.

Yes I'd agree, if you can estimate that it would be at the MINIMUM mark , you will be OK in the short term provided the top bit of the broken stick can be inserted to stop oil coming up the tube.

just use a hanger, make it as straight as possible, put it side by side against your dipstick and use a marker for the 2 dots. dip it in, check where its wet and that will tell you if you are close to the mark. Fill with oil as needed.

Thanks for your help guys and all the advice but i rather not do any D.I.Y jobs on making a new dip stick even it was only for a day, knowing my luck I would make a cock of it .As regards the old dip stick is no good what so ever because of where it broke.. I was just hoping another cooper s owner may of had a spare one, ill do without until ill get a replacement..

How big's the hole? Best thing I could think of is one of those expanding wine stoppers, if the hole is about the same size as a wine bottle!

I'd go along with this as long as the bung still screws onto the filler.
