It would depend on the actual cars your looking at, miles, condition, NCT, import or irish/uk (impreza only) and mods (if any) I think personally I'd take the EVO as they're not as common as scoobys and the engines are less likely to go (not saying Subaru engines are unreliable, just younger owners are less likely to maintain them properly and rag the arse of them)

The evo for me, they are much more fun to drive and make quite a sound of you wake it up a bit :)

I find impreza's boring when compared with them, to me an evo feels a car better drive.

post up the two ads so we can see what your looking at, might help with people giving advice.

I have no useful input but I cant stand the Look of EVO's until the EVO X came out. Impreza's can look well though if there is some restraint from all out chav'ing. Also Rota Grids.. get them :D

evo all day for me, had to sell my 7 recently and it killed me, Dont rush into buying one and definitley dont buy a cheap one. A dog will cost you serious money in the long run. Hold out for a clean unabused example, look after it and it will look after you.

When viewing make sure to see it up on a ramp/or pit. Theres alot going on underneath and you need to see it all. Also the big thing killing evos nowadays is rust. Back chasis legs, around the rear diff moustache bar mounting points, rear footwells are all common spots that get very bad very quick. Rear arches can go rusty also.

If you not overly mechanically minded or dont know alot about evos/imprezas (whichever you choos) bring someone that does....could save you alot of money in the long run.

oh and in the evo 6, make sure the AYC light comes on with ignition and goes off again, do a few tight circles at low speed at listen for odd noises from the back end.

Could start by looking to see if they are advertised online

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi-evo-6/5890605

Be careful with the evo if the work required was so little why wouldn't he test it?
On the other hand it could be fine.
You really need to go look at both and bring someone who knows what to look for, you will have a lot better idea then

could be a leak in the exhaust or lambda sensor gone, you can test the sensor with a multimeter. looks ok for the money but at that price id be going through it with a fine toothed comb

This is especially true with evo's! A bad one could break you

I've had both. I'd buy an Evo again tomorrow if I was looking for that.

Imo the Impreza is the better built of the two but the Evo will probably be easier to live with at the end of the day.

I currently own an Evo 8 FQ 320 MR.
I love it to bits and I make sure only a specialist gets to service it (the guy is well known in the Evo scene).

My cousin has an Impreza and I like that aswell.

Both have big power potential if that's what you're after.
Both have 4 doors if you want to carry a few passengers :)
    Both are 4 wheel drive.
Both will cost on petrol :)

My advice would be akin to what others have said--->make sure you don't buy a dogs arse of a car or else you WILL pay.

I thought that the AYC did not appear until the 7 and that to avoid it you should go for the GT or the RS. The RS avoids the ABS too as well as some of the frills like electric windows and mirrors.

Nope there before then. I used to get the AYC oil changed out every second oil service on my Evo 5.

Am I right then about the GT and RS being AYC free?

I take an occasional urge to get one and would want to avoid the AYC. So far though, common sense has prevailed and I've stayed withe the Exige.

I like Scoobies. Passed a lovely 02 one that lives near me earlier today. Like EVO's too. I've driven a couple of examples of both and the EVO would nudge ahead for me. Scoobies can be confusing with so many special editions and the like, EVO's are a little less confusing in that sense. I prefer the mid year models. NOt so keen on the later of either type. Maybe cos I'm an old fart or something. Both are complex buggers in the oily bits dept. though, so you'd want to get a well looked after good one, or a lifetimes supply of valium. :) A friend of a friend in the UK has run a 90's Honda NSX and a later Scooby special edition or other for ages and the NSX never misses a beat. Hail rain, snow or nuclear war, the Honda keeps going. The Scooby has given him a few "you better be sitting down for the bill" moments though. That said his Scooby looks pure evil compared to the NSX. And can sit four adults and is more practical and quicker in the twisty bits and more grip and...

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

An NSX is a far better car than an Impreza, despite which one is quicker.

No, Earlier evo's had ayc rear diff too, then from 7 on they had ACD in the Centre Diff (transferbox)

The Rs did not have ayc, and thats what alot of lads fit when the ayc pump goes which they almost all do.
