Marcia Wallace, the voice of Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons, died on Friday at the age of 70 from complications related to breast cancer, according to several media reports.
The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean said in a statement on Saturday that the death of the "brilliant and gracious" Wallace was a terrible loss. He said Wallace's "irreplaceable character", a fourth-grade teacher who has to deal with Bart Simpson's constant antics, would be retired from the show. The role earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance in 1992.
The longtime TV actor's credits ranged from playing a wisecracking receptionist on The Bob Newhart Show to appearances on Candice Bergen's Murphy Brown.
Wallace'€™s career began with a semi-regular stint on the "Merv Griffin Show,"€ and also involved successful forays on the New York and Los Angeles state where she appeared in productions of "The Vagina Monologues," "Gypsy" and "Prisoner of Second Avenue."
Wallace was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985 and became involved in charitable groups involved with treating the disease.

    Rip.

Brilliant voice actress and a great character in the first ten seasons. They really need to end the Simpsons. RIP

It was the best show on Tv in its day. When the episodes were built on original plots. Now they just fill the episodes with whatever celebrity they can find.

One of the best ever Simpsons moments in that episode.

    Some other great quotes

"Three simple words. I. Am. Gay."

"How about a crocodile bite off my face"

Still cracks me up even now :D

RIP. Marcia was an institution on the Simpsons. I loved Mrs Krabappal, it'll be sad to see her retired from the show. The writers will also have to come up with some storyline to explain the lack of 'Nedna' in the next series as well, I would imagine.

    It's probably Hank Azaria.

Thanks, so it wasn't my imagination that there was a bit part voice the odd time that sounded like Charlie Bronson. I was actually quite hoping someone would comeback and say that he himself had did the voice. That would have been cool. Ha.

Wait a minute. Bart's teacher is named Krabappel?
Oh, I've been calling her Crandall.
Why didn't someone tell me? Ohhh, I've been making an idiot of myself!

He is one of my favourite characters. "Hey watch it chief" "Hey kid you look good with that cigarette, kind of sophisticated" and my favourite line he shouted in the episode when homer gains all the weight to be able to work from home, "Hey pally, I got a movie for ya, A Fridge too far!" :D:D:D

He's played by Hank Azaria BTW.

    Very sad.

In this country we revere teachers and pay them inordinate amounts of money.

In the US it's a poorly paid job with people who have a desire to teach but are completely beaten down by the system.

    That was Edna.

Lol. The cigarette one brings back memories. Yeah cool voice. I now have to quote once upon a time in the west.

Harmonica: I saw 3 of these dusters a short time ago, they were waiting for a train.
    Cheyenne: so?
Harmonica: Inside the men there were 3 bullets.

They don't make movies like that anymore. I'm watchng it again tonight after I watch one of the Edna Simpsons episodes.
