What will the guards do if they stop a learning driver who is unaccompanied? Are they strict about it? And what could do they have permission to do?

Gardai can and do prosecute drivers with learner permits who have no qualified driver in the car. If I remember correctly, the technical charge is for driving without a licence, as such.

EDIT: you have to get up early in the morning if you don't wanna get beaten to the punch by infosys.

Depends on the Garda that you get and the mood they're in. They have gotten stricter about it.

What they can do is take the vehicle from you and make you walk home or ring someone to come pick it up. You can be summoned to court and fined up to €1,000 on the first offence.

It's a bit of a gamble on the first offence. You might be lectured and sent on your way, or you might have the vehicle taken from you. If you are summoned to court you will probably only be fined in the region of €100.

If you've been caught once, you will definitely be seized and summoned if you are caught again.

Obviously I can't condone driving on your own, but in general the gardai tend to be fairly lenient and just give a caution as long as you don't act the maggot; bringing people with you, speeding etc. Once you have a reasonable excuse such as you have no other way of practicing for the test or something a lot of gardai are fine.

If they wanted to, or if you were a cheeky c*nt, you'll get a court summons and have to explain to a judge why you did what you did.

If you have an accident while driving unaccompanied you would have some explaining to do.
