    Hey all,

    I need some guidance please...

    I have an LG smart tv connected to a Sony AV Receiver, as follows;

    Skybox into Receiver via HDMI

    Receiver into TV using HDMI ARC to utilise Audio return

    System works lovely when watching Sky, but when using any of the inbuilt apps on the TV such as Netflix, or watching anything on hard disk I'm still getting the audio from the Skybox. The only way to hear Netflix is to turn off the amp, and use the TV speaker. Am I cabling incorrectly ?

    Tks in advance for any help guys :)

    You haven't done anything wrong with the cables. When the TV is the audio source and you do not have ARC then you would need to send the audio from the TV to the amp using an optical or co-ax cable. In your case ARC can do the job but you'll have to check the TV and amp manuals to see how to use the ARC for getting the audio back to the amp.

    In most cases you need to enable ARC on both the TV and the amp via their setup menus and you may then need to select 'TV' as the audio source on the amp instead of the Sky box which is probably using a HDMI port labelled something like 'CBL/SAT'.

    If you're still having problems, post the exact model numbers of the TV and amp here. Note that ARC only works if both the TV and amp support it.

    Thanks for your reply MJ, I'm unsure how to select the TV as the audio source. Or how to enable ARC on the amp, can't seem to find any info on that in the manual. The model numbers are as follows;

    LG 3D 42LA620V

    Sony STR-DH520 Receiver

    Thanks for your help :)

    Thanks for your reply MJ, I'm unsure how to select the TV as the audio source.

    Press the 'TV' button on the Sony remote when you want the AVR to accept the audio signal from the TV via ARC. To go back to the Sky box, press the 'SAT/CATV' button.

    no joy, turned on netflix on tv, then selected TV on remote, no sound at all, selected SAT/CATV get skybox sound again. I've double checked the connections and I definitely have tv & Amp connected via The ARC channel

    You need CTRL for HDMI switched to 'on' on the amp, check the Sony manual, the page is p.48 in the online version the page is titled 'Preparing for the Bravia sync'.

    With 'TV' selected on the Sony remote and observing the display unit on the front of the amp, press 'Input Mode' repeatedly on the Sony remote and it will cycle through 'auto', 'coax', 'opt' and 'analog'. Leave it set to 'Auto' which will prioritize the audio signal coming back via ARC.

    thanks man, I had all that done, so I switched hdmi cable, still not working. I then tried using a digi optical cable, and it works now perfectly :)

    Still don't know why audio is not returning to the amp via ARC, but hey, it's working now, so using the extra cable doesn't bother me :)

    Thanks for taking the time to help me out, appreciate it :)

    Grand, I could see that the TV had an optical out port so that was my fallback solution if you couldn't get ARC working. Glad to hear you're in business.

    Sorry for the thread necromancy, but this is actually very simple to fix (and it's a really stupid bit of design).

    Simply turning on the HDMI ARC output option on the LG isn't enough. Go into the Smart TV section, and down the bottom click on 'more'. There will be a 'Simplink' icon. Go into that, and turn Simplink on.

    After I did this my ARC worked fine for all sources, including Smart TV apps etc.

    Hope this helps.
