Questions about how to use boiler...

I'm trying to figure out how to heat the water in my friends house. She just moved in and neither of us have seen a system like this before.

Here is the pic of the main boiler

It says the pressure should be between 1 and 1.5, but it's currently hovering around 2.5. Is this ok? Will it explode in my face?

There are some levers underneath it. Pic below

Also, there's another box with some buttons, not sure what it's for other than timing the heating. I seem to be able to heat the water without touching it. What's it for? See the off, auto, cont... ? It still heats the water when set to off

how the FECK do I work this thing properly??!!!!:pac::pac::pac::pac:

    Thanks

The pressure should be down at about 1.25 bar you can reduce the pressure by venting a rad , it's a combi boiler so as soon as you open a hot tap the boiler fires and heats the water directly , that timer is for the rads only , by the way it's a rubbish boiler

How is it rubbish exactly? Not very efficient is it?

So since it heats the water directly, it won't cost much to just leave it switched on all the time?

You have an Immergas Zeus Mini.

Here is the link to download the instruction manual.

Combi boilers are great , as it only heats water on demand you are only using gas to heat the amount of water you are using , you are not heating a huge volume of water to have a 5 min shower then letting the rest of the hot water cool down in the cylinder .
Your boiler make is crap , very troublesome , crap service manuals to work from

That's one of their better manuals and it's still crap

I have to agree with you, they are a very troublesome unit, I wouldn't take one for free.

    OK thanks...

Now I have another question about a different boiler!

So these things are set to have hot water ready for the morning.

The tank is very well insulated, it's has that hard thick foam that seems to be moulded around it. Would these tanks keep the water hot all day? At the moment we have it set to heat the water during the day so my housemate can have a shower before he starts his night shift. Basically the timer thinks the afternoon is the cheaper elecrticity rate and the water is nice and roasting during the evening & night.

He's very stubborn and won't try to use it the normal way as he says there'll be no hot water at night, even though I said the current set up is more expensive.

So do the tanks keep the water hot all day? Because I want to set it to the normal time without telling him and see if he notices.

I know I should really write to an agony aunt.

    The ESB love these timers
If they are set up the way they are meant to be, they start at 11.00pm (ish) and finish at 07.00am (ish) that max 7 - 8 hrs of consumption @ 3kw per hour albeit at the lower tariff. Do the maths.
If nobody is using the hot water until the evening the water will have cooled down in a 10 - 12 hour period any maybe a lot lower than he likes.
I reckon you would be better off getting an electrician to change the clock for a type that allows you to time on and off anytime you want and wire it to the upper immersion which will give anyone enough hot water for a shower. Time it for a couple of hrs before anyone needs a shower and you will save a fortune on electricity bills.

One more question about the E7 Quartz Hortsmann... does this also control the storage heaters?

    No.

One of many Boards threads about these heaters..

The storage heater's controller is usually found up at the fuse board.
This is a typical controller, but yours may be different.

    Found it thanks.

one more question please!! This thing is so confusing. I have the E7 horstman timer set as normal, but the boost light seems to come on by itself a lot. I mean I set it to "stop" as shown in the attached Pic. I go for a cuppa tea then come back to find it at "start" with the boost light on. Happens every time.

Does this happen if you use the boost function and it makes its way back Stop and then starts again, or only when you try to move it to the Stop position?

If it does not do it when the boost times itself out then make a mark at that point and see what happens when you bring back to that mark yourself.

    The one in bold.

We never use the boost function ever. For example sometimes I would walk past the timer and notice the boost light is on, and the dial is sitting at "Start". I then twist it back to stop (like the photo above) and the boost light turns off. Next time I see it, the boost light is on again.

In fact I just turned it to stop now because I heard the immersion beginning to boil the water and ran downstairs to check it out, and I guarantee when I go back downstairs in an hour or so, it will be back at "Start" and the boost light will be on.

I want to give this thing a head butt!

    Thanks for your help.

It may be a faulty unit then.
If it is turning on by its own accord then I would deem it a hazard and would recommend you have it changed by a qualified electrician.

Ok I guess I'll call the maintenance guy.

I put some bluetac on the dial when it was at "stop" and you can see that it creeps to the left and then stops at "start".
