Hi. I was on to Walkinstown Clutch & Gearbox today getting a price, and I see the Avensis listed on the main page. I never dealt with them but saw somebody mention them here on Boards.

    Toyota Avensis 1.6/1.8 any year
    €350 inc vat

Their price includes everything, the clutch AND labour

Thanks lads for the reply but I got it wrong it's actually the gearbox that needs replacing. Any ideas on prices for a job like this please.:(

I know a lad who works for cash changing gearboxes and engines. He charges 120 a day plus about 300 for the box and about 30 for gear oil.
Most garages will be a few hundred more.
Universal gearbox will charge 600 to take the box out recondition it and put it back in.

Ouchhhh thats gonna cost me more than the car.hmmmmm don't know if it's worth it, but it has NCT for 9 maths and some tax.

is the car going well other than the gearbox?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 92 ✭✭KALO

Yes the cars in great condition other than the gearbox.

If I was you I would recondition the gearbox. My logic is your car with the gearbox gone + €600 (cost of repair) would not get you something as good as what you have now.

Yes I was thinking this also there's a lot of cheap cars but not many with 9 months NCTand tax. Thanks dh0011. Any ideas how much a recon and fit would cost me and where would I find someone to do it.?

universal gearbox in dublin quoted 600 to remove recondition and refit an avensis gearbox a year ago. Also get a quote from the red cow gearbox centre.
If the clutch wasnt changed when you changed the engine this should be done now too so add on the price of a clutch.

The sister got her 2000 Avensis gearbox done a couple of years ago for a bit over 600.

Dhoo11 did you mention a guy who does the box for 400 all in? The clutch was replaced previously. How long could I drive it for the way it is? Sounds like there's something rubbing against the wheels 4 th gear is a bit crunchy.

yea he works from his house and it is only himself there - is very cheap. He is in Cork though.
Not sure. I know a girl whose yaris has an awful noise coming from the gearbox for the last two years and it is still going.

Ok cheers dh0011 cork is a bit far but I'm sure I will get it done a lot cheaper than 600.

Hi gearbox went in my 02 avensis d4d 1 1/2 years ago. Got a second hand one online for 150 + 30 euro delivery. Garage near liffey valley charged 180 to fit Inc oil. 360 total. No probs since.

@christy02 where did you pick up the gearbox from if you don't mind me asking please?

This guy is doing part exchange recon boxes. http://cars.donedeal.ie/carparts-for-sale/toyota-avensis-gearbox/2318099

You'll have to factor in the removal, refitting and gearbox oil which isn't cheap for the Avensis.

Scrap yard in limerick. Can't remember name but found it on partfinder.ie. Just get ringing around. Prices vary dramatically. Stay away from Dublin as tend to be more pricey. Fitting is around 4 hours Labour so average 40 - 50 an hour. Not that big a job.
