Is the Power Clean Push Press awesome?

    Is the Power Clean/Push Press a great all-round strength builder?
    I want to focus on one compound barbell exercise to go with my running, pull ups and abs.

    Can I do better than power clean push press ?


    Should I do them one at a time as heavy as I can take with good form and rest between? or do heavy sets of 5-7 kind of thing? any opinions?


    Just lookin for opinions on the exercise, how good it is what I'll gain from really focusing on it.

    Q: should I replace the push press with a straight military press instead - to remove the 'cheat' from the action making it more difficult and therefore likely to build more raw power or is that the wrong way to look at it? I don't know..

    I started today with one rep at a time at 50 kg with 20 seconds rest between each lift, focusing on going from the ground to above head in as straight a line and as smoothly as possible...was tired after the 20 lifts.

    any opinions appreciated..

    Ok I don't know what a power clean/push press is but I know what a power clean is and what a push press is. If you're going from the ground to over head in one movement it's more like a snatch. And being honest it sounds like your doing it wrong.

    For one movement I'd stick with squat or deadlift. Learn to snatch or clean in the mean time though, it's great fun.

    The power clean is ****. And he doesn't lock out his push press.

    Don't waste your time. Get strong on the basics as ste said already.

    but is the exercise itself a good one to focus on entirely i.e. will just doing it and no other strength exercise build good strength if you were to just pick one?

    It is a good exercise, and yes if you had to pick just one it would be a good choice. Make sure you are not doing it like that guy in the video though.

    Google 'barbell complexes', they would probably be right up your street.

    thanks man I was doin the Randy Couture complex for years and it got me stronger and fitter but I kinda want a one time compound sort of power exercise that I can just focus on every day/other day and build explosive power from the ground up and I kinda thought this one might be a good contender

    Power/clean push pressed hits a lot of areas. And if you were only allowed to do one move it would be a good choice. Another good choice would be heavy thrusters as it's also an upper/lower combo move.

    But one problem with that thinking is that you aren't only allowed to do one movement. There's no good reason to impose such a rule on yourself.
    Another is that power cleans are far more technical than other lifts, and your technical limitations could hold back power/strength development.
