Does your computer have to be up to scratch to get 150mb broadband. I have a Inspiron 545 2.8Ghz 4GB Ram which is about 5 years old. I'm on a 150mb broadband package but only get about 60mb hardwired at the moment.

The Ethernet controller is A Realtech FE 10/100 .. does this cope with 150mb speeds. My cables are Cat5e but which I think can only cope with 100mb ? I have ordered CAT6 but not sure if that will cure the problem.

Kids get about 35mb on IPAD 2 .wireless set to "n" mode only .

Using latest version of Firefox.. have run UPC fibre optimer etc but no change in speed. UP have tested the line and advise I am getting 150mb to the router

    Any info appreciated !

    Dak

Your prob is going to be above, its only good up to 100Mb. If using wireless not an issue but if you wanted plug in to try get max speed then its not going past 100Mb. The UPC router will have 1Gb (1000Mb) ports on it so the interface to your laptop will only come up at 100Mb and even then you may not get the full speed out of the interface.

    Hope this helps

You should see close to 90 mbit tops.

I had a gut feeling that was what the issue was. I suppose computers are technologically obselete after 5 years . I'm not going to spend any money on a Gigabit Controller for an old dell and have ordered a shiney new one with an i7 chip

Getting 70-75Mb on a wired connection off a 100Mb line.
The pc is 7+ years old so can't see it being able to cope with higher speeds (haven't checked the gubbins to be sure , but 7 years old tells me enough).

Getting 56-60Mb at the same time on a 2 year old laptop by wi-fi so I can't complain about the speeds.
Any line speed increase by UPC will be wasted on me I'm afraid.

You need a Gigabyte Ethernet controller 10/100/1000 to get 100mb and above

Ethernet controller 10/100 you will not get 100MB you cant expect max of 90mb if lucky

If your pc or laptop only has a fast Ethernet controller 10/100
You can still purchase a Gigabyte Switch with choice of 4/5/8/16 Ethernet ports
    Prices are cheap

You will need Gigabyte Ethernet controller 10/100/1000 to get 100mb 120mb 150mb 200mb and above
Not all recent laptops have a Gigabyte Ethernet controller some cheaper ones only have a fast Ethernet controller 10/100
You can tell if using windows 7 or 8 by checking

    Network and sharing Center
    Click on Ethernet
Speed will show 1.0 Gbps if you have a Gigabyte Ethernet controller
Speed will show 100 Mbps if you have a fast Ethernet controller 10/100

This was not a problem for most Broadband users in the past as the average top download speeds was below 100 MB packages

Wireless you will need Wireless N
important part here you will need to make sure the router setting is 20/40 if you want above 144mbps
Setting to on router Wireless 2.4 ghz setting 20/40 MHz will allow up to 300mps or more depending on your router make
Setting router 2.4 ghz to 20 MHz only will only give you max up to 144mps
Note if using a dual band the 5ghz is using 40 setting only

Realtek 8139 cards are good for 60mbps or so tops in real life. Horrible bargain basement crap.

Got a netgear wifi extender and a netgear powerline AV 500 gigabit plug in wireless extender. Now got 100% signal and coverage in any part of the house. You have to connect your wireless devised to the extender on your wifi networkto get the signal strenght.

If I just connect to the CISCO 3925 without the extender I get 4% coverage in the part of the house that is furthest from the router
