Buying a car three years out of NCT & TAX

    Hi,

I am thinking of buying a project car that has not been taxed or NCT'd since late 2010.

CAr is driving, and I'd need to transport it a short distance. Question is if I apply for the NCT immediately after buying it, can show proof of this, plus proof of recent purchase and insurance, would the guards be likely to take the car off me if they stopped me on my way home?

    Any ideas?

JUst a heads up ask the owner if the Rf100A & RF 150 has been completed as per the new laws which came into force as of the 1st of Oct. as back tax to 2010 may be due if not.

Not if the op buys the car, he will owe nothing in outstanding back tax

The OP is only liable for tax from when he/she buys it.

Nobody is gonna tell you to risk driving without nct or tax.
Even if they do its your own lookout if you do get caught.

Any chance the seller could deliver the car....

Op if you get a plod on a bad day he can take the car, that would make the expense of a trailer VERY SMALL

As colm-mcm said no body is going to advise you to do something that is illegal.

If you are still going to go ahead and do it your best situation is to have proof of very recent purchase; have proof of recent insurance cover and have proof of application for an NCT.
You should score on the NCT because the situation where you have to wait months for a test is a laugh and may impede on your constitutional rights.
The rest depends on the good nature of the Garda and I think if he assesses the genuineness of the situation you may well escape.

It's quite a gamble to drive a car with so much time without nct.
Is the seller a friend or just some guy?

Do you not need to be in possession of the log book to do the test?
If you apply for a test and for one reason or another the book doesn't arrive then you'll be liable for a missed test fee, likewise you cannot tax the car either so IMO most guards would be almost compelled to give some scope unless of course it's clearly an unroadworthy vehicle. However it is technically an infringement and a copper on a bad day could throw the book at you or even give you the standard 10 days to produce.

If the car is on the system the log book is not required for the NCT.
I am sure that the OP does not intend to tax the car in the previous registered owners name for obvious reasons.
You cannot tax the car in your name without the arrears penalties until the log book is registered in your name.
When registered in your name you do not need to have the log book with you.
Go to the tax office to tax it and they will stamp the application form and that gives a little known 7 days grace.
Have a look at donegal co. Co. One of the few Co Co that show it on their web site
