Newbie looking for camera advice

Hi lads & ladies,


Myself and the other 1/2 have decided to buy ourselves a camera for Christmas as a present to each other rather than buying individual things.

We travel as much as we can and would really like a good camera to bring with us. We both have crappy digital cameras at the moment but want a decent upgrade.

I had a look at cameras online and I am totally lost with types etc.

Would anyone spare a second and point me in the right direction to what would be a good quality, good starts camera.

Budget would be around €500 but if it was less than that I wouldn't complain.

Would have to be new too.

A Canon 1100D with an additional 50mm 1.8 lens should come to €500 from Amazon. Basic starter DSLR with a kit lens that will let you take landscapes etc. on your travels and the prime lens for portraits and when you want to start experimenting with aperture etc.

I presume that is the one? Do I then need to buy an additional lens as you mention above?

if you are buying a camera for travel, it could be a bit cumbersome to bring a dslr & a host of lenses, if it's only for snaps.
why not check out some of the fuji x series fixed lens cams?
perhaps an x20. nice, compact & super image quality!

That's the one. You don't have to buy the additional lens but if your budget is 500 its a good lens to have.

If it's for traveling, I personally would not go for a DSLR.

I wanted a camera I could easily travel with and yet would not compromise image quality, so I got a Micro four thirds camera (E-M5)

Panasonic have a new M4/3 camera just announced - the GM1 - which is amazingly compact for a non fixed lens camera and would be a very good contender for anyone looking for high capability in a small package:

I would suggest a Pentax Q7. It is small, has a full set of features and controls and has interchangeable lenses + the lenses are nowhere near as expensive a micro 4/3.
