Well currently i work on a toll bridge and if I was successful I'd be hoping to keep on one day at the weekend while training, I am guessing a toll bridge would be fine

Don't think you can be in employment. Your paid a Garda trainees wage of around 200 a week.

Off the books as in cash in hand? where I would be talking about working it doesn't work like that

"Working cash in hand, off the books"

Have you heard about the law of the land?

Is it the Garda or the Mafia you are applying for?
Make sure you tell the interview board about your weekend plans.

So Santa Cruz have you never in all your days had a job or done a few hours off the books, even as a young lad?

Well if your idea of the mafia is a person who does a couple of hours on a Saturday in a shop or petrol station or whatever for 50 or 60 quid while in college then you will get a good eye opener if you join the guards.

He isn't a young lad doing summer work. He won't be in an ordinary college. He will be in the Garda College. If you ever get a chance look through the Garda Discipline Regulations and Revenue law and you will see that what he is suggesting is contrary to Garda Regulations and contrary to Revenue Law.
    He intends becoming a Garda.
Can you not see the problem here?

And where can I find these garda discipline regulations that you know so much about?

    you are wrong.
as a garda student or in fact as a full time member, there is NOTHING STOPPING you from having a part time job.
as long as that job is not on the list of prohibited part time activities, this is a list you will be told about when you join. any other job is perfectly ok.
revenue is nothing got to do with it, if you are working on the books and paying tax, everything is hunky dory:)

    Look at your last sentence.
Revenue has something to do with it. It was suggested that he work in the black economy i.e. cash in hands, off the book. That would not be condoned.
Working in a position that is not prohibited which is not black economy and does not interfere with his training would be fine.

yea but the OP didnt ask about working cash in hand, he merely wanted to know about working part-time.
so no, shouldnt be any issue with revenue so long as tax is paid etc.

Go back through the posts and quote exactly where it was ' suggested' that he work off the books, don't be jumping to conclusions now Santa Cruz

There is a list of prohibited spare time activities(I.E Part time jobs). These are provided to all new entrants during induction. Most are jobs that require a licence(owning a pub, off licence or Taxi), or one that would conflict with your position as a potential garda (debt collector).
There are however plenty of gardai who were driving trucks, working in Bars, Gyms, nursing homes etc during their initial phases. Once you keep your taxes above board(it won't be an issue as a part time employee), there is nothing wrong with it.

However once you are on your on-the-job training, and later on, probation, you will no longer have the time for your second occupation.

Thekopend brought in the suggestion of "working off the books, cash in hand"
I merely pointed out that it was not advisable as it was against Revenue Law

Hold on let's just get this straight for the record. I never 'suggested' it in anyway. The op asked about working I said there are restrictions and then said that I know some people that did work off the books.

    And I said

I was only saying that I knew people who have done it. You then proceeded to jump the gun and ask me about the law of the Land and if I was joining the mafia.
I knew then that you had taken me up wrong but I decided to ask you if you have ever done it because a lot of people have but don't realise. Doing any work for even small money is technically off the books and againsed the law of the land. One example of an indefinite amount of examples would be mowing your lawn for your neighbor for the summer for a tenner a go at 16 years old. This is off the books technically. I never suggested it or said I do it or approved of it in annyway, the word you are looking for is I mentioned work off the books.

I never stated that I will be working off the books at the weekend either.

You need to read posts better befor you rant. It wouldn't do if you were making all these miss understandings or jumping to conclusions in the job of a garda would it.
