Imac built in ethernet missing

Have a prob guys and seeking much needed help from you please.

have a late 2007 imac running mountain lion. in prep for mavericks some time ago i ran Clean My Mac. all seemed to go fine however afterwards i tried to logon to the mac app store and failed.
Got the message " an unknown error has occured". theres nothing wrong with my apple ID as i can login on my other macs.

well ive been researching this oddity and during this journey ive discovered that ive lost my Ethernet setting in network preferences. im able to connect to the net via built in wifi in the imac, but it would seem that the apple servers run a check when you login to the app store and use the mac address of the ethernet card as part of the integrity check.

so how do i resolve this issue, assuming im correct that the missing ethernet entry in my network preferences pane is the cause. i have a usb ethernet adaptor but i cannot spoof the mac address of the original card as i dont know the mac address of it?

Did running the clean my mac session cause the disappearance or is this just coincidental and there is a hardware fault with the NIC ?

    any help would be appreciated

    update
went into terminal and ifconfig ....no en1 listed in there so thats the issue cause as far as i know the apple servers reference / look for the en1 listing

tried to add it back in via NEW in network preferences, however its not available as an option in the drop down

Did you try re-adding Ethernet using the plus button in Network prefs?

I've never used CleanMyMac, but yes, it may have been the cause. I avoid all these cleanup and space-saving apps. They are destructive, deleting system resources, and are well known for hosing people's systems.

yep..tried adding via plus but ethernet is not one of the available options.
i still suspect the NIC, deleting the networkpref plist file should force it to rebuild on reboot once it sees it missing.

damm ethernet is missing in system profiler as well....

its not a major prob to be honest as i will prob buy new mac pro at xmas...but its a challenge to try to get to the bottom of it.

been chewing on this for months on and off and looking at the issue now again as a result of new os upgrde

    appreciate the help

    Try a clean install maybe?
