I have a 2011 Toyota Corolla which has a USB port. Can this be used (or adapted) to charge devices (phone/tablet etc) or is it just for ipod connection?

I believe it works as iPod input for controlling and playing music (while charging) as well as to play music off USB storage and upgrade your system firmware.

You can buy USB chargers that plug in to your cigarette lighter socket, Ebay or your local phone shop will have them.

Does that show up as a USB drive or a Creative device when you plug it into a computer? I believe the HU works with FAT32 formatted devices.
