Query About Registering as a Sole Trader in Ireland (but I Live Abroad)

I would like to set myself up as a sole trader. I'm an Irish citizen, but currently reside in Belgium. My local enterprise centre here advised that it would be better for me to set myself up for tax in Ireland (and I assume that it is legal to do so).

I've got the TR1 form from the Revenue website and am a bit confused by the version for non-residents. It asks for my "Garda National Immigration Bureau Number" and "Stamp Number", so I'm not sure if this is the correct form for an Irish citizen.

Would it be better for me to register with the regular TR1 form, and set up at my family address? Or would I be allowed to register with my Belgian address?

If anyone knows how I can go about this (legally of course) I would appreciate your advice greatly.

You can not set yourself up as a sole trader in any country other than where you reside. In your case, that would be Belgium. you could set up a company in Ireland, that would result in more taxation and admin. costs.

Note if the income is earned within Belgium as a self employed person this would need to be returned to the belguim tax authorises. Therefore registration as a sole trader within ireland would be of no benefit for taxation purposes.

As a non resident the only income which would be returned within ireland would be earning within the state rather than your worldwide income.

    Hi

It is beyond the scope of this forum to give professional advise on international tax matters.

I think it is unlikely you will get anyone posting here who is an expert on the Belgian tax system and how the the rules of residency for that country might apply to you

Seek professional advise on this please.

    Kind Regards

    Dbran
