can a mechanic identity this part for me.

Hi folks
I need some help in identifing a part in my 2004 volkswagon golf 1.4 petrol.i have taken pictures of it as you can see below.my problem is there is a hose which leaves this part which is broken at the joint it looks like a fuel hose but the car seems to be running ok.i would be greatful if someone could identify what this is for me.

Model number from Google says Charcoal / Carbon Cannister - on eBay for €15-20.

That sounds right to me.what does that filter do is it safe to drive it away.

Look's to be one of those many environmental friendly additions to modern cars. Not too sure of the safety aspect of it to be honest...

A charcoal canister is part of the evaporative emission control (EVAP) system in many modern automobiles, which is designed to keep gasoline from evaporating into the atmosphere. Rather than venting a gas tank to the atmosphere, an EVAP system can allow fumes to flow into a canister that contains activated carbon and is therefore capable of adsorbing the fuel vapor.
