Small accident, my fault, forgot to get other driver's details

I was turning right off a main road and got hit in the rear by another driver. It was dark, and raining. My fault - turning across his lane. His car was undamaged, but I've to make a claim on my own insurance for my car. Thing is, I forgot to get all his details. Will that cause all sorts of problems with the insurance company? Also, do I need to report it to the Gardai?

Rule of thumb is that if there is no injuries to people then no don't report it to the gardai. I'd a very minor prang with another car a few years ago (total cost of repair €170) and when I/we rang the police they told us to get away out of ourselves.

Are you sure the other party will not claim? If so then firstly get an estimate for the damages to your car and if your policy is comprehensive report it to your insurance company, if it's TPF policy no point as you'll have to pay yourself.

If it is comprehensive, then understand the cost of repair and compare it to your excess and how muc hyou need to claim.

Did the other person get all your details?

Yep, it was a small tap, with no damage to him or his car, and we thought it was so cut and dry neither of us swapped details.
But I have to make a claim (bodywork and airbag), so wondering if the insurance company will put me through the hoops for not having all details - and thereby effectively admitting liability.

Is it so badly damaged that paying for it yourself is out of the question?

Most cases where the other guy hits you in the rear, it's their fault, thus I'm thinking you won't be hearing from this guy, because even though it's "cut and dry", it's also his word against yours, and without pictures, he may think you have a strong case. Him not giving you his details strikes me as him not wanting you to put a claim against him?

OP is at fault though on the basis that he/she was on a minor road and did not pay due care and attention to the major road and traffic on it?

OP again, check the repair cost, and evaluate against your excess and potential impact on your NCB

You have to report all RTIs to the Gardaì. You don't call them out if no one is injured you just drop down to the station later on.

Thanks for the responses. I should have said the impact was the rear passenger door. I turned across his path and he stopped a couple of inches too late and hit the door. He was on the main road going straight.

Damage is €2K+. Have step-back no claims protection so will claim.

You are not required to report all, unless there was injury, or property damage where property owner is not present. Not sure what average Gardai would do if you go to say you rear-ended someone, exchanged details and all sorted. Is he supposed to log it somewhere? What for?

no need to report it to gardai OP. On a separate note it might be worth getting a few qotes for the repair. If the damage is to one door then you might be able to get one froma scrap yard for a lot less than 2k.

They just log it in pulse aa they don't care. Most insurance policies I've had required reporting to the Gardaì.

Usually being hit in the rear means you are not at fault OP.
I would not be too hasty in admitting liability.

Did you have the right of way or did you think you'd enough time to make it before he passed?

    That's what accidents are about.

    In the rear side.
It was rear part of side of his car.

My understanding is that OP was driving on main road, and decided to turn right into side road. He had to give way to oncoming cars, be OP failed to do so (maybe he didn't see car coming).
