Horizon is UPCs all in one box for BB/TV/Phone.
More spec compared to their old boxes, including recording four channels simultaneously. Don't know much about it really.
What package are they offering OP?

    HI,

I think there has been allot of interest in the new Horizon box. I am curious exactly as to what the advantages are over my existing UPC cisco router.

    1. They advertise Horizon as a 200Mbit device, yet most people use wireless-N or wireless-B/G adapters in their laptop, netbook, or tablet. So you wont get any increase in bandwidth over wifi. I would like to know if anyone in the country could verify that they truely got 200mbit on a wifi connection.

    2. The HD channels work only on your HD ready TV. Streaming them to a computer over wifi instead of using a good hdmi cable means allot of quality is lost, and its more of a sub standard definiton TV.

    3. The price is around 50 euros. But, thats only for the first 6 months. After that it goes back up to nearly double.

So all these key selling points, are exactly why people are going for it. Moreover, they are in all honestly a bit misleading.

In contrast the horizon box is realistically inches better that a current cisco home router.

    1. The 200Mbit is achievable if you use a networking cable or a powerline adapter.

    2. The streaming TV is a feature driven by market demand. You can see how popular this is in the USA, as they have been using it for some time now on small Internet TV boxes. It is a cool feature.

So in conclusion, I think the Horizon box is massivley overhyped and only inches better than an existing home cisco router.
But, I guess we have to ask who manufactures the horizon "box"? Is it made by UPC themselves?
I have a feeling the cisco router will live on however. UPC offer business packages and your sure to find good cisco routers there.

    Aubrey Bourke.

Yeah your right. Theres too much of this over-hyping things. You know putting up adverts everywhere. They all claim to be the best thing ever. But allot of it is superficial. They all do the same thing. You surf on the broadband 20 50 100mBit. It doesnt really matter because the highest bandwith is hardly ever needed. For example If your reading text and graphics on a website, doing your emails, banking and shopping you honestly dont need that much. Its only when you have allot of people in the home connected at the same, time doing intensive things like watching streaming HD video on youtube, streaming music, multimedia, and gaming.

In fairness if you want a higher bandwith you should know why. Tired of marketing departments deciding what people want. I know how to spend my own money, I dont need people to tell me how to buy anything. Especially when allot of the time is exaggerated.
In fairness 20Mbit broadband is actually plenty for a small network. Its only when you multiply the type of internet activity by number of users that it may be a concern.

I guess allot of it comes down to the deal. Generally we want the most they can for the price and it has to be easy. Would be nice sometimes to feel part of the whole thing and really care and really even just appreciate what I have. Allot of people just get by on common sense, or struggle with the lack thereof. Awareness is something you develop yourself, it happens slowly and it should make sense to develop it.

I am really upset with how life is really the opposite today in regards to branding, advertising, respect and winning. All the best hardware and software, telecommunications products, etc are all developed for and used in the enterprise. They know what works, its secure, its efficient and isnt shoved in your face. Its really respected and they make money based on this fact. Oracle, Vmware, Cisco, etc are really awesome.

I guess you cant expect everyone to know every little trick and spec about technology. But its another thing to endorse somthing that isn't really the next best thing to rock the whole wide world! Infact, instead of paying these marketing guys, I would rather be serviced by an IT consultant, who could come to my home, setup the netwok, secure it, optomize it and teach me how to use it. This concept of support is really of prime value in the enterprise (business world).

So, obviously you cant really go wrong with most of the deals as they are all basically the same thing. One might have an free app. The other has a free phone. Its up to you to decide what brand you want and dont worry about making mistakes. Just follow your heart and dont listen to crazy artists who make posters!
