    Here goes

I recently updated to OSX 10.8.5 and am now unable to open any MS word documents. All I get is "you can't open the application"microsoft word"because powerpc applications are no longer supported

I have tried various word apps that I downloaded from the app store but still no joy.

I have also tried using pages and textedit but the results aren't great

    Has anyone got any suggestions?

It sounds like the version of Word you're using is pretty old! What version is it?

    Use OpenOffice instead. http://www.openoffice.org/porting/mac/

Very old. MS Office 2004. It's PPC only and requires Rosetta to run on an Intel Mac. Apple dropped Rosetta quite a while ago now. 10.7, I think.

Either upgrade to Office 2011 or find an alternative.

You need to update your version of MS Office. You'll be sorted then.

Updating means OP has to buy a newer version of MS Word/Office.

OP, you may be able to get iWorks for free so perhaps try it?
