What kind of bartender do you want to be? Regular local pub? Cocktail bar? Restaurant? Craft beer bar?

There are always jobs going in nightclubs, especially coming up to Christmas. They may not take you on as a bartender straight away but as a "bar back", which means you'll be getting ice, loading the glasswasher, cutting limes, replenishing stock etc. After a while then you could ask to be bumped up to bartending. If you're a quick learner and get friendly with a bartender you can ask them to show you the basics when it's quiet thus making it easier for you when you ask to be bumped up.

Local pubs can be harder to get into as they may have established staff that have been there years and so there's less chance of an opening but it's worth asking. A lot of places will be looking for staff at least in the run up to Christmas.

One word of advice, if you're handing in your CV always ask to see the manager, don't leave it with the bartender as the manager will rarely consider it if he/she hasn't seen/spoken to you.

Plus 1 about asking for the manager if he does not see you handing in the cv... chances are he will never even know its there.

That course is aimed at professional bartenders i.e. people working in upmarket bars and clubs who plan on staying in the pub trade for a long time. I don't think it would be good for you until you've got at least some experience anyway.

If you have floor staff skills already you should be grand to get a foot in the door in most places.

Just a word of advice, a great bar back will never be full time on the bar. If you're a guy this is what you're most likely to be. But being really great at it is few and far in between.

I'm a bartender and bar back in the largest (capacity and size) in Cork city, a place with all stairs. If you are trying to work in a nightclub remember this if nothing else, you HAVE to be HAPPY. There's no choice in the matter, you can be a miserable sod in a local bar because people won't care, but in a nightclub, it's weird to see a miserable bartender, bar back, floor staff. There is nothing worse than it.

So, make sure you have a very happy face before starting in a nightclub, because if hard work makes you get frowny, you'll always be sad.

I can't knock being a bar back though, given the nightclub I work has 200+ stairs and no lift, I'm in the best physical condition of my life, I am happy every night I work because of endorphins and every now and then a random girl will give me her number and/or kiss me when I am unable to resist......nightclub work is fcuking awesome for a young, quick, charming and motivated person.

If you're in Dublin, I'd try the usual big spots, Coppers, Diceys etc....But I'd actually like to work in Lost Society or the Twisted Pepper (they just got nightclub of the year)

This post was kinda rambly, but I'm hungover, so I can't read back. If you take anything from this, it's to be happy all the time in work.

    Best of luck lad.
