Anyone been to see these? Is it worth the trek? Are the queues a pain in the hole? Last relics I went to see in Knock in 2008. There was queues but I skipped them. Will there be security at this one or can you just sneak up to the front. I just want a quick look, won't get in anyones way.

Haven't been to see them, I would've probably tried if I knew about them earlier.

A friend when to see them. He came away with a very positive reaction to the crowds attending the mass ceremony to venerate the relics.

I'm not a christian. Jesus would be pretty annoyed people were going to see relics.

    Why go see them then?

I find them interesting. I find people who flock to see them interesting.

    2 things -

    1) No he wouldn't. "First, I am the Lord, your God". Going to see the relics of a Christian saint, as opposed to a pagan idol, or a Buddhist monk, confirms your adherence to the first commandment. You may try to learn more about what that saint did to live their life as a Christian, and try to emulate them. It can strengthen your faith, or perhaps give you a different perspective on how Jesus wants us to live. I think Jesus would be pleased to see people taking His worship so seriously.

    2) If you're not a Christian, that kinda disqualifies you from making statements, about what you think Jesus would have thought, as fact!:P

I'm praying to Saint Anthony to help me skip the massive queue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,760 ✭✭✭Effects

    Skipped the queue!

Queue is split for each relic. I've seen one and going back for the other. Great buzz here.

Queue split for each relic. No one in command seems to know which relic is which.

This is either a cheek or a rib. None of the priests or brothers could tell me which. One even thought it was a toe.

Third commandment - Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.

Personally, I think the Lord would be a more than a little disappointed to see people flock to bow down to a worthless object.

That's my thoughts on it. But as mentioned earlier, maybe it will inspire some people to be better christians. I'm sure there's some that think a visit will excuse their behaviour too.

Dunno what Bible you've been reading, that's not the third commandment! And a piece of human bone or skin is not a graven image! U wouldn't be a non-Christian aswell now would you?

Who's bowing down? I think the Lord would be delighted to see people making the effort to connect physically and historically with something that has a relevance to their otherwise, "blind faith" based spiritual beliefs. This is a Saint, he is real, he actually lived, here is his remains. This is not just St. Anthony the fairytale, here is part of the actual, mortal man himself. It is definitely a faith-strengthener. This man dedicated his life to doing what Jesus wanted, why cant we?

Excuse what behaviour exactly? Is there anyone rioting there? Anyone selling drugs? Anyone skipping queues? Even for non-Christians, dare I say it, even for atheists, skipping the queue is not cool:mad:

I'm referring to Christians who attend mass/service in an attempt to absolve themselves from 'sins' they commit rather than being better people.

Ah, my mindreading powers must be on the blink tonight.

But seriously, I agree. People who steal from others, rip others off and call it "business", cheat, lie, chronically waste time watching boxsets from end to end, kill, badmouth others through racism, bigotry, rumours, intolerance of beliefs, people who judge others or treat them differently based on prejudice, people who lack respect or morals, people who fight every weekend, people who are hypocrites, people who are never happy with their lot and do nothing only make everybody else feel bad about what they have etc., they all have one thing in common - they are PEOPLE!

People do bad things. We shouldn't, but we do. Nobody's perfect. Atheist or Christian, we all feck up every day in some way or other. Us Christians call that "sinning". And yes, we should ALL try to improve ourselves, and not feck up so much.

But, at least if you're Christian, and you adhere to the belief that when you feck up, you should seek forgiveness and start fresh, then by going to Mass / Service you are doing exactly that. HOWEVER, if you just carry on in the same old pattern, you would be completely missing the point.

Still, its better than fecking up and doing absolutely nothing about it whatsoever.
