Travel at least 60 miles a day, car at moment does average 30mpg so costing a lot. Want a car that is large enough for 2 adults and 3 kids and is economical, over 50mpg average.

I could just afford a 2009 prius, has anyone good/bad experiences with this car.
Toyota updated them from 2009 with 1.8 engine so are they a good buy??

    Also opinions on qashqai diesel..

    thanks

Prius will be more reliable anyway and if you can get the best out of the hybrid system (I couldn't ever get good mpg out of them) they should be economical, I wouldn't bother if its all just open road driving. Prius is big enough inside for legroom but not massively wide.

I have a mk2 Prius and I like it in many ways. I would say it is not wide enough for three kids, especially if your kids are porkers.

I average over 60mpg out of mine but it is not easy to stay that high.

They are very cheap to run and service. They seem to be very reliable.

I know nothing about a qashqai.

Shortly there will be a Mad Lad here recommending the prius. If it was me I would have one. The next car I buy will be one.

    I have a 1.9TDI octavia which is burning 4.5l / 100km long runs, 5.3L / 100km on short ones.
Cant believe the difference on the previous 1.4l petrol Golf.

If your only interest is a Prius or Qasqai, sorry for an irrelevant post.

I have a 1.8 MK III Prius. I just recently upgraded from the 1.5 MK II.
Although I don't have kids to put in the back, the 1.8 does seem to be more roomy than the 1.5.
As for economy, running a 50 mile e/w commute on the M/N 11, I'm averaging around 63mpg just driving 'normally'. If I want to try and utilise the Hybrid system for all it's worth, I'm sure that 70mpg+ would not be impossible.
Servicing is cheap enough too, even from Toyota.
Take a test drive in one, and take your kids with you to see if you can fit them all in comfortably.

As for the Qashqui, I know a few people that had them but they never kept them for long.
