What Clubs should I buy?

I am 32 years of age and feel like playing a lot more golf. I have been hitting balls since I was a teenager so on the rare occasion when I do get onto the course (around 8-10 times per year) I actually play quite well, I have never had a handicap but I estimate it to be in the low teens - e.g. last weekend I played I shot 86 on a par 72.

Up until now I have been getting by on hand me downs from my brothers who are fanatical golfers. I had a set of Dunlops which did me for years until one of my brothers reckoned they were holding me back so he gave me his set of Cleveland X16 irons which took a bit of getting used to but I definitely found them alot better than the dunlops once I had.

The Clevelands are in Ireland now while I am in Canada - so I am debating whether to bring them over or buy a new set. I have played with some rental sets recently - Ben Hogan with a graphite shaft which I loved, hit some great shots with them and last weekend with a set of Wilson Staff V2 which I really didn't like at all. Felt too light in my hands, got some horrible feedback with mi****s (which I know can be a good thing) but I am thinking the clubs were too advanced for me.

So any advice on a set clubs that feels like it has a light/stiff shaft with a heavier head that feels solid going through the ball?

I have this kind of set up with my mizuno mp53 irons that have DG sl stiff shafts

Although they're somewhat specific and they'd most likely be a special order I love them.

If Canada is anything like the US, I would purchase a set over there. Much cheaper & fantastic fitting services. Choice is also enormous.

Thanks for the link but I was asking more for anecdotal advice of the posters here rather than a link to a shop

Try find a golf shop that has a range linked to it. They'll likely allow you to try out a number if sets before you make a decision.

If you're either very tall or very short then a custom fit might be worth looking in to, but if you're of an average height & build then it might be an unnecessary expense.

There should be plenty of value in a good second hand set.

My advice would be to look at game improvement irons if you're relatively new to the game & don't play too often. They're more forgiving on off centre hits. MP series mizunos have been recommended above, but the old mx series irons or newer jpx irons might be a better fit for you.

If you're looking for something a bit neater than a lot if game improvement irons, the titleist ap series irons might also be worth considering.
