Replacing rear bearings

    Been advised today the rear left wheel bearings need replacing. I am thinking of getting both sides changed at the same time. Is this standard practices? I'm just thinking in terms of preventative maintenance. Mechanic said the other side was grand.

    Car 2006 Mondeo 2.2 diesel, 100,300 miles on the clock. Pretty much motorway miles, driving Killarney - Dublin

    Lefts go much faster as its generally the worse road conditions. Replace them as they go

    Certainly makes sense that the lefts go first. Will replace with SKF bearing & hub kit. Will be a different make to the right side but doubt it would make a difference.

    Id be surprised if you needed a hub at that miles. Iv only had to do a hub too and that was a 200k miles diesel avensis

    The rear bearing only comes as a complete hub assembly on those Mondeos.

    Lots of cars use a hub assembly, some are very expensive!
    Chrysler Voyager over €400, and Renault Megane series 3 are around €230-40

    Christ that's something I never came across in my ownership :)
    Just checked the e60 quickly there as I was worried, but I'm Ok :)

    I can get a SKF kit online for €130. I'll check with Ford but I reckon they will be in the €300+ mark. Ford make some money on parts. They charge in the region of €280 for an egr value. I can get the same part through Jaguar (same engine) for half that price.
