LOVE/HATE director David Caffrey would be "flattered" if asked to helm the US remake of the award-winning gangland drama.

Producers of the hit RTE series have confirmed that an American version of the programme will be screened within 18 months, after being sold to a cable channel in the US.

"You have to wait and see with all these things, but of course I would be flattered to be considered for the job if it's remade," Caffrey told the Irish Independent.

"It's very exciting stuff and I'll be as thrilled as anyone to see it [air] over there. There is still a lot of work to be done it gets to that stage though. I'm concentrating on here for now."

Last night's episode of 'Love/Hate' saw Tommy (Killian Scott) narrowly escape death, unbeknownst to himself.

A frustrated Fran (Peter Coonan) has grown increasingly unimpressed by the criminal gang's lawyer and his assurances over the tiger kidnapping and viewers saw him lash out by holding a gun to Tommy's head while he admired a litter of puppies.

However, King pin Nidge, played by Tom Vaughan Lawlor, came to the rescue after a distressed Siobhan stormed into his son Warren's First Holy Communion party.

But Nidge's plea for Fran to let Tommy live has resulted in a power shift between the pair and Wicklow-born Caffrey told this newspaper that audiences will be kept guessing throughout the rest of the season as to who will come out on top.

"It keeps going as it started so there's no let up at all plot wise. The intensity will be a similar boat to the opening episodes because you want to keep it in such a way that there's a lot of drama for fans, week by week," he said.

With 'Love/Hate' now in its fourth instalment, Caffrey admitted there has been pressure to maintain high quality drama that viewers find gripping.

"There's pressure across the board with everyone involved creatively and that's the nature of it, but it is an enjoyable pressure," he said.

"It makes you work harder, because like anything, if you've won a trophy before, you know the sensation and you do your best again to get up to the same hype and applause."

'Love/Hate' has become a television phenomenon for RTE over the past three years.

As well as selling to several overseas territories, including New Zealand, North Korea and the UK, season four premiered on Irish screens to 970,600 viewers.

"The reactions and reviews have been kind also and that is very satisfying too," Caffrey added.

The director is currently working with creator Stuart Carolan on season five of the production, which is in development with RTE's head of drama, Jane Gogan.

'Love/Hate' continues next Sunday on RTE One at 9.30pm.
