Dualshock 3 Controller Not Working Properly...

My PS3 controller is doing something very strange. When I booted the console up, the XMB appeared as per usual. Then I noticed the menus scrolled all the way to bottom by itself. I didn't press Down on the d-pad, and I didn't flick the left analog stick downwards either. Basically, the PS3 is acting as if I'm holding the "down" button on the D-Pad.

This is rendering my D-pad (or indeed any other button, except the middle one) unresponsive, and I can only flick the left analog stick upwards for it to scroll up, until it decides to scroll back down itself once I let it go. I'm going to try and record this and post it up here later on if I can.

Has anyone ever experienced this? If so, is there a fix? I don't want to open the thing up, it's the only PS3 controller I have and I don't exactly have the money to fork out for a new one at the moment.
