I believe its actually one of the terms and conditions for multiroom with them.

    From their website;

"3. Your extra box will require a connection to a working telephone line - this verifies that all boxes are being used at the same address."

Previous people might have had a phone line which he probably tested to establish you can get a speed of 2mb, doesn't mean its turned on at the moment. It would need to be turned on for you to be able to make calls, otherwise it wouldn't really do anything being connected to an inactive phone line.

Yes, I recently added Multiroom to my package and there was a phone line needed. I thought it was a case of adding it to my bill, sending out a new box and hey presto, but they had to send a guy out for installation and the phone line was used.

    Secondary Question:
As it was the cheapest option, by a distance, I just opted for the regular Sky Box. But I now would like Sky Plus which is in the original room. If I just bought a Sky+ box second hand would it work if I swapped it with the regualr Sky Box?

Not sure if this will help your cause but you can use the rf out on your skybox and deliver the picture to another room .

You can change the box to a sky plus box no problem, you can ring them and get the card re-paired to the box. however you will need to bring in a second cable from the sky dish to the box for full sky plus functions.

However be careful where you obtain second hand box as sky are now blocking any second hand boxes sold before there 12 month contract has expired.

What is this second cable for and where does it connect, I've a HD box downstairs and in pretty sure it only has one cable from outside connected to it

The Sky+/Sky Hd boxes have 2 tuners/2 LNB inputs for same time recording watching, each tuner requires a separate connection to the dish, otherwise your watch one/record one options are very limited.

Ok thanks for the explanation, I think one cable would suit me as I'd only be recording when I was out anyway. If I was switching from a normal multiroom box to a + box do sky increase the charge for the box monthly?

No, the box is yours. Sky charges are for the programmes not your box.

Any of the boxes that record need the second input cable, I'm not aware of any of their boxes that record on single channel, and if only one of the two is connected, that can cause issues, as the internal software will expect both to be working. If one is not, and the software goes to use that tuner for the recording, it will fail to record, and there's no way I know of to force it to use just one channel of the 2.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

The settings can be changed to "single feed" mode by accessing the installer's menu so there isn't a problem with recording from a single feed in this instance.

Does it cost extra on my subscription to get sky multiroom?

It costs €15 a month and you may have to pay for the box and/or installation depending on what offers they have available.

Probably better to give them a call and see if they can give you a free box and installation. If not get a second hand box from a reputable supplier on Adverts.ie and get someone to throw in a couple of cables for you and change the lnb if necessary

If they subsidise the multiroom you will most likely be tied to a 12 moth contract.

They are doing an offer for free standard HD box and free installation if you take Multiscreen. Called them on thursday.
Upgrade now and watch on the big screen in another room with a free Sky HD Multiscreen box and free standard setup*

Couldnt order online, since it just kept adding the setup fees, but called them, and they did a order for me :).

It costs 15 eur per month

Just setup my HD multiroom box today, got the box paired and changed to single feed and it worked ok after that, will have to cable that second feed line in and get it going properly, nice to have On Demand now too
