Would you consider repairing a mobile phone a waste of money?

My mother just spent 160 euro to get a new screen put in on her samsung galaxy s3.

she went into the store to get a replacement to find out the insurance company stopped taking payment without notice.
Can they do this without let you know?

Depends on the phone tbh, if it's something relatively new then no it's not a waste, if it's cheaper to replace the phone itself than whatever is broken then yeah it is.

She was so depressed without the phone even though she had a spare phone

Spent 30 quid for a decent case, small price to pay for protection for a 500 quid phone

Sounds like the insurance companies are phoning it in.

Yip, I had to pay €150 for a new screen for an S4. Didn't have the feckin thing 24 hours when it slipped out of my pocket and fell on its corner. If it hit anything but that corner it woulda been fine. Since I'm not bill pay I paid full whack so an extra 150 was a pain but necessary as I didn't even think of insurance. Bouncy cover on now though.

I'd never pay more than €50 for a phone, there's no way in hell I'd pay that kind of money to repair one.

It isn't one of my better ones, I'll admit, but explaining it is just sad. I'll only go as far as to say it's a common expression.

Nice mark up on that service.
    http://www.amazon.com/Generic-Replacement-Glass-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B00C9VATVS[/quote]

    It doesn't include
    Technical Details

Glass Only, DOES NOT include digitizer or LCD. If your LCD and Touch Screen can work well, only the outer glass lens defective or broke then you could buy it to replace.

Expensive phones are a waste of money

You can get a cheap rectangular yoke with a touch screen that runs android

or you can pay more for an expensive one

not much difference in functionality anymore.

I'm afraid that the speaker on my Nokia 113 is on the way out. Surely a new 113 (€40) is cheaper than repairing it..? :D

not easy you have to be very very careful removing whats left of the old glass. I attempted it on a S3 that I found on the street but fcuked it up removing the last piece of glass. Put a nice crack in the digitiser so now I have to pay 100e+ as well

Not necessarily. I replaced a speaker in my old E63 for only 2 quid and it worked great after. Not sure how easy it would be on the 113, have a look on ebay for a speaker sure

€2 is nothing  was it hard to replace?

I did the screen and digitizer and mid chassis on my S3 as it was all damaged around the edge.
Paid 100 sterling or so for the part and fitted it myself. Delighted with it tbh as phone like new again and I certainly wouldnt get a replacement for that price.
Generally the bits for phones are cheap. I also changed the speaker ages ago. €9 and fitted myself. Well known phone fix company wanted 200 euro or so for the speaker repair

How's the 4G reception for posting selfies on Hipstergram Instagram. Or do you have a vintage polaroid camera and just pin up pics of yourself in 'edgy' dive bars?

    That's insane!

No, not really. The outer glass replacement is not a factory spec repair and from many reports is not worth doing. The outer glass is bonded to the digitizer over its entire area with optical quality glue from the factory. When replacing just the outer screen, People separate the touch digitizer from the broken glass and simply stick the new glass on - fixed around the edges only. There are issues with this in that touch function is not quite perfect and also dust will make its way between glass and digitizer eventually.
The correct repair is to replace the digitizer as one piece with the outer glass. These are €100 or so to buy and might take a half hour to fit.

Is it even possible to buy the glass and digitiser but no screen?

The good old keypad membranes were a lot easier to fix.

My wife broke the screen on her samsung galaxy ace. We bought a replacement screen on ebay and fitted it with tutorial on youtube total cost was €11.

    SAMSUNG Galaxy S GT-I9000

Dropped it at least 20 times over the past few year. Be god she's bounced off many a hard tile and a solid concrete surface. From heights, heights as high as the eye can see, me pocket that is.

Not a tap on her boy. She'll take many more a battering I'd say.

    Greatest phone ever.

    I LOVE SAMSUNG.

OP said she needed a new screen.

Why are people posting links to cheap glass screen layer links instead and calling rip-off? It's not the digitiser, not the LCD screen, and not the servicing of installing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭yomamasflavour

    I've had a Galaxy s2, s3, and now an s4.
Have dropped them countless times, never had any scratches or glass cracking issues etc.

All you need is one of the rubber jelly cases and then they're near invincible.

I remember people doing that - or a similar scam with Irish coins - in Berlin in the mid 90s? :)

As for a serious answer to the OP, it depends on the phone. I tend to upgrade my phone about every 15-18 months so it'd just depend on where I was with the current phone. I got my current phone a week ago so I'd definitely shell out for repair if needed.

Personally I think there's a world of a difference. Especially with the quality of the screen and the responsiveness. That said if you don't notice it, or don't care about then yes its a waste of money for you.

If the phone isn't responsive its the fault of the firmware that runs on it. Even basic phones are way more powerful than a Nokia 3310 or 5110 that was responsive. Swooshy slidey screen effects that can't be disabled, java and general software bloat are to blame and of course the manufacturer's decision to load the said software onto the phone without trimming it down for the cheaper models. Beside that a slightly nicer screen and maybe a 4G transceiver is all you get for your extra €200-300

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

Software and firmware bloat is a big problem. But that's not what was talking about.

You're talking about phone responsiveness not screen responsiveness. The screens on the low end phones and tablets are a world away from the high end ones.

    http://bgr.com/2013/09/20/iphone-android-touch-screen-responsiveness/

Apart from the screen, there's a whole range of different hardware that can be different. It may be a multi-core phone, more ram, more storage, better audio dacs, better mics, maybe dual mics. Better camera, better lenses, maybe better image stabilisation, better speakers, maybe a better image processor, better graphics hardware. Bigger battery, a screen that's better in day light, brighter and maybe less reflective.

Thats why one is more expensive than the other.

Of course if you just make phone calls and send the odd text then a €9.99 phone is all you need not a €800 iphone.
