Hi I am currently in receipt of jobseekers allowance and I want to do an online distance learning course with coursesdirectonline.ie but I'm just wondering do I have to tell Social Welfare about it? if so will my payment be affected? Thanks

I wouldn't think so, those courses are not accredited, so would be equivalent to a hobby evening class.

Have you looked at the FAS online courses?

If you're a "Jobseeker" in receipt of a Jobseeker's Payment, you would need to notify them if it will affect your jobseeking activities. If it's done outside of this I don't see it affecting things.

I'm not sure if getting the okay from a "Facilitator" to approve you doing any Courses or Education and Further Training is a requirement or not, I "think" it is but could be wrong, but just to be on the safe side, I would go into your Local FÁS Employment Services Office, (not Social Welfare Office,) ask to speak with or make an Appointment with the Mediator? / Facilitator about a Course. Explain that you want to do a Course and that it won't have any affect on you applying for jobs, you'll still be applying for jobs when they arise, and they basically give ya the go-ahead to do the Course. That's exactly what I did anyway and there was no problem with it. They're more FÁS than Social Welfare people, what they did with me anyway was entered all my skills n' training etc. info into my PPS number Profile, - they go over and re-hash my info anytime I go into them to talk about Training and Courses, (I assume is accessible by D.S.P. / Social Welfare anyway if they really want to look at it.)

The Course I did though was an actual FÁS Online one. Not sure where they stand or if they refuse you wanting to do no-FÁS Courses. All my Course material was accessed online, (I know that some Distance Learning Courses use a mode of sending material in the post!) There was a bit of bullsh1tting back and forth at the start to get off the ground and start the Course, but I was set out a Password then to commence the Course. It was very enjoyable actually. Would love if there was more Courses available to do online.
